HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its campaign for a 21st consecutive winning season with two Conference USA matches against Louisville and Cincinnati at Hofheinz Pavilion this week.
The Cougars (16-7, 6-2 C-USA) will face the Cardinals (19-4, 8-1 C-USA) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Bearcats (17-6, 8-1 C-USA) Sunday at 2 p.m. The Houston squad has won its last three and is 3-1 in conference matches at home this year.
The Cougars have lost only three of their last 12 matches (Saint Louis, Rice and South Florida) and have already clinched a berth in the 2002 C-USA Healthy Choice Tournament with their fourth place C-USA standing.
Houston is led by three-time 2002 C-USA Player of the Week Jenny Tanneberger. The 6-0 senior middle hitter leads the squad in kills (417), attack percentage (.334) and blocks (87) in 23 matches this season.
Last week Tanneberger was named C-USA Co-Player of the Week, posting two double-double performances in wins over DePaul and Marquette. She averaged 6.0 kills and 3.13 digs per game and racked up a .372 attack percentage for the week.
Middle hitter Loure Dews, who injured her plantar fascia last month, is expected to see action this weekend. Outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek is still rehabilitating a fractured left arm and may be back for the 2002 C-USA Tournament to be held Nov. 22-25 in Chicago.
Seniors Tanneberger, Karasek and Donna Sellen will be honored at Houston's last home match of 2002, a rescheduled C-USA contest against Tulane on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. at Hofheinz.
