Houston Spikers Pick Up Win Over UAB

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team defeated UAB 3-0 at Hofheinz Pavilion tonight in a Conference USA match-up. The Cougars, who outscored the Blazers 30-28, 30-14 and 30-26, improved their overall record to 14-7 and 4-2 in C-USA play. The victory wrapped up a five-match home stand, its longest in seven years.
Two-time 2002 Conference USA Player of the Week Jenny Tanneberger led all hitters with 25 kills (.400) and eight digs. Laura Koster posted a double-double, adding 17 kills and 12 digs, while setter Donna Sellen added 45 assists and 10 digs. Libero Jaci Gonzalez also contributed 10 digs to the defensive effort.
The Cougars, who lead the series 12-0, outhit UAB .351 to .164, committing only 12 hitting errors on the night. Martina Shields led UAB (10-15, 3-5) with a double-double, posting 15 kills and 11 digs.
UAB pulled ahead in game one, keeping the score close but eventually leading 10-7. Houston scored six straight behind the serving of Tanneberger and took back the lead 16-15. The Blazers came back from a four-point deficit and tied the game at 25. Tanneberger served three more times and sealed the deal with a kill, 30-28.
Houston's hitting brigade was errorless in game two and the UAB defense could not convert, eventually falling by 16 points. The teams exchanged leads three times in game three, with Houston leading by as many as four. UAB tied the score at 23, but Houston answered later with three straight points to win game three by four.
The Cougars will travel to DePaul and Marquette next weekend in more C-USA competition. Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion as Houston battles Louisville on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
