GOLF, Ill. - The University of Houston golf team fired back-to-back team rounds of 299 to tie for ninth place after the first day of the Windon Memorial Classic in Golf, Ill., on Monday.
The Cougars, who compiled a two-round score of 598, are 25 strokes behind host Northwestern on the 6,745-yar, par-72 course at Glen View Club. Duke was in second place at 578 with Stanford, North Florida and Oregon rounding out the top five team leaders.
The tournament concludes Tuesday morning with the final 18 holes.
Senior Brett Callas, who has emerged as UH's most consistent player in the fall season, topped the Cougars after shooting back-to-back 74s and tying for 24th place at 4-over-par 148.
Fellow senior John Wine tied for 32nd place at 6-over-par 150 after recording 75s in the first two rounds, while Chris Cureton and Simon Robinson were tied for 36th at 7-over-par 151.
Freshman Zach Mowbray, competing in his first collegiate tournament, was tied for 49th place at 10-over-par 154.
Individually, Northwestern' Tom Johnson topped the leaderboard at 4-under-par 140 with Stanford's Jim Seki one stroke back. Peter Laws (Kent State), Chris Carnahan (Oregon) and Scott Harrington (Northwestern) tied for third at 2-under-par 142.
