Houston, TX - No stranger to community service, the University of Houston women's swimming and diving team will be assisting with the Regional Special Olympics Swim Meet this Saturday, September 8, to be held at the Don Cook/Fort Bend County Natatorium.
The Cougar swimmers and divers will not only assist the Special Olympics participants in the pool and on the deck, the team will provide other assistance with the meet. There will be an opening ceremony at 8:00 a.m. The meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. and last until approximately 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. The Cougars will be on hand from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
When it come to community service, the swimming & diving program has been one of the most active Cougar teams in the athletics department. Last year the program, under sixth-year head coach Ginger Hurley, staged a drive to collect bottled water for area residents who had their water supply contaminated during flooded conditions. Many Houston teams are involved in the popular Cougar Pals programs where UH student-athletes interact with area youths and encourage athletics and learning as an alternative to drugs.
"Special Olympics is a tremendous organization and it's an honor for us to be able to have a small part," Hurley said. "We've done a lot of different things in the community the last couple of years and I know this meet will be a lot of fun. I hope a lot of people will be able to come see and join in a special time on Saturday."
