Taylor McColskey joined head coach David Rehr's staff with Houston prior to the 2022 season following three successful seasons at Mississippi State.Â
Â
McColskey, specializing in attacking, helped push Houston's offense to new heights in 2022. The Cougars hitting percentage increased 23 points to .249, the third highest in program history and 46th best in the country. He assisted one of the greatest seasons in team history, with Houston reaching the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1994 and being one of five teams to post 30-or-more wins.
In 2023, McColskey helped mentor AVCA Third Team All-American Kenna Sauer and AVCA All-Region honoree Abbie Jackson while also tutoring Kellen Morin who broke the team's hitting percentage record, hitting .387 (172-40-341) on the year. He aided the team as it earned a place in its second consecutive NCAA Tournament, defeating UC Santa Barbara in the first round before falling in five sets to #2 Stanford.
For the 2024 season, McColskey continued his successful guidance of Houston's hitters. Angela Grieve tallied a team-leading 354 kills on the year to earn All-Big 12 Second Team accolades. Avery Shimaitis posted new career-highs in hitting percentage and kills while Katie Corelli had a breakout season, hitting nearly .300 with 319 kills, both new career-highs.Â
Prior to arriving at Houston in 2022, McColskey spent three seasons at Mississippi State (2019-21), two seasons at Georgia State (2017-18), three seasons at Georgia Tech (2014-16) and a season at Jacksonville (2016).
Â
While at Mississippi State, McColskey helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2021 after going 25-5 overall and 16-2 in SEC play. The Bulldogs ranked as high as 23rd nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll during the 2021 season.
Â
In 2021, McColskey acted as the offensive coordinator and helped tutor Gabby Waden to AVCA All-American honorable mention and All-Region honors. In addition, he mentored three more AVCA All-Region honorees in Lilly Gunter who was voted to the South All-Region Team, and Shania Cromartie and Lauren Myrick who were named Honorable Mention for the South Region.
Â
Over his first two seasons in Starkville, Miss., McColskey had a hand in the program's rise in the SEC during the Julie Darty Dennis era. In his role, McColskey served as the program's recruiting coordinator, while assisting in training student-athletes and scouting opponents. His diverse coaching background and experience on the court had a major impact on the Bulldog program, especially at the net.
Â
During the hybrid 2020-21 season, McColskey helped coach right side hitter Gabby Waden to All-SEC honors and libero Lilly Gunter to SEC All-Freshman Team laurels as MSU claimed series sweeps of No. 7 Texas A&M and Ole Miss, as well as a series split against Georgia.
Â
In McColskey's first season as an assistant coach for Mississippi State volleyball, he helped lead the squad to an 11-1 start, which tied the program's best 12-match start all-time (2000, 1992).
