Lottie Scully Surpasses 3,000 Career Assists

Senior setter records 24 assists to bring her career total to 3,014 while Torres-Rivera notches 34 digs in five set loss
HOUSTON – Senior Lottie Scully tallied her 3,000th career assist, and senior Alana Torres-Rivera earned 34 digs in a heartbreaking five-set loss to West Virginia on Thursday night in WVU Coliseum. 
 
Now sitting with 3,014 assists in her collegiate career, Scully is one of 27 active Division I players to surpass 3,000. Torres-Rivera continues to put up substantial dig marks in her senior season, recording her second match of the year with 30-or-more, while freshman Gillian Pitts tallied her fifth double-digit tally of the season. Offensively, redshirt sophomore Alyssa Gonzales led Houston's attack with 12 kills.
 
Houston (8-13, 1-9 Big 12) started strong in the match, using a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 lead in the first set. While West Virginia (14-7, 2-7 Big 12) fought back to take the lead at 17-15, Houston rallied to win five of the next six points to take a 20-18 edge. The lead held for the remainder of the frame as the Cougars took the first, 25-22.
 
Winning six of the first 10 points in the second, Houston continued to hold the edge in the second. Up 15-11 at the media timeout, the Cougars saw their first deficit in the frame at 19-18 but went on a 7-1 stretch to take the set, 25-20.
 
West Virginia seized the momentum late in the third. Houston took a 11-6 lead early in the set, but a 5-0 run from the Mountaineers put the host team in front. West Virginia controlled play after to win the set, 25-20.
 
After holding off a late surge from the Cougars to win the fourth, West Virginia won the first five points of the fifth set to claim the early advantage which they held throughout the frame to win, 15-7.
