Jason Allen joined the University of Houston Volleyball program as an assistant coach on Feb. 28, 2014.
In his role, Allen works with the defensive system as well and serves as the program's recruiting coordinator.
The Cougars' defense made vast improvements across Allen's first two seasons. After averaging 14.39 digs per set prior to his arrival, Houston improved to 15.36 per set in 2014 and 15.98 in 2015. The Cougars averaged 2.10 blocks per set in 2015.
In 2014, his first season at Houston, Allen worked with the outside hitters and middle blockers. He helped coach outside hitter Kadi Kullerkann to AVCA All-America honors after registering 644 kills in a single season.
Prior to joining the Cougars, the Houston native spent the 2013 season at Marquette where he helped the Golden Eagles to a 26-6 overall record and 15-1 mark in the new BIG EAST Conference. That season No. 11 Marquette advanced to the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship Second Round with a sweep of Louisville.
With the Golden Eagles, Allen served as the defensive coordinator, working with the middle blockers and the back-row defensive alignment, and was the video coordinator.
Before Marquette, Allen spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa from 2008-12 coaching the Hawkeyes' defense and serving as the recruiting coordinator starting in 2010.
Iowa's recruiting classes earned national recognition every year during his tenure in Iowa City. His 2010 and 2011 recruiting classes produced 62-percent of Iowa's starting lineup in 2011, and helped the Hawkeyes claim four non-conference tournament championships over the two seasons, while Alex Lovell became the first Hawkeye in six years to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors in 2012.
Allen's efforts in his first two seasons at Iowa paid immediate dividends as the Hawkeyes posted the most overall and conference victories in nearly a decade and got off to a program-best start to the season in his second campaign, 2009.
In 2010, Allen served as the head coach of the Iowa High Performance Junior National team that advanced to compete in the USAV High Performance National Championships in the Wisconsin Dells.
Allen spent the 2007 season in Houston as the 16U Head Coach for the Texas Tornados club program, considered one of the top volleyball clubs in the nation. Allen led the team to a No. 17 national ranking and coached 10 players who received Division I scholarships. Four of Allen's players were also named to the top 120 players in the country list by numerous publications. Allen led his team to a first-place finish at the 16 Open Northeast Qualifier and also served as the recruiting director and webmaster.
Prior to his time with Texas Tornadoes, Allen served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Sam Houston State University from 2004-07. He helped lead the Bearkats to a second-place finish in the Southland Conference in 2005 and coached a total of eight student-athletes to All-SLC honors. Allen was also responsible for video scouting, recruit evaluating and summer camps.
Allen was an assistant coach for the Lone Star Youth High Performance Teams in both Austin and Houston from 2005-06. In 2005, his team finished fifth at the USA High Performance Championships and in 2006, the team finished 10th.
Allen began his collegiate coaching career at the Division II level, where he was a graduate assistant at Southwest Minnesota State. In his single season of coaching, Southwest Minnesota State was crowned co-champions of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and appeared in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. He also helped coach five all-conference and two all-region student-athletes.
From there, Allen moved on to North Dakota State University to serve as a assistant coach and recruiting coordinator (2002-04). North Dakota State won a share of the North Central Conference title in 2003 and qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament twice, including a "Sweet 16" appearance in 2003. Allen helped lead four student-athletes to all-region honors and two to All-America honors in 2003. He also recruited and signed the North Central Region Freshman of the Year in 2003.
Allen was a member of the men's club team at Oklahoma Baptist. He was also played for the International Sports Federation volleyball team for two summers traveling throughout Northern Africa, playing various national teams and hosting clinics for junior national teams.
Allen is a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist (2000). He earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in communications, business administration and psychology.
Jason and his wife, Jen, have a daughter, Sophie. The family resides in Houston.
