Houston volunteers 275 hours of community service during Big 12 Impact Week
HOUSTON – University of Houston Athletics student-athletes gave back to the Houston community in multiple ways Sept. 28 – Oct. 2, contributing over 275 total service hours across five community initiatives as part of Big 12 Impact Week.
The annual conference-wide campaign highlighted the commitment of Big 12 student-athletes to community service and connection, providing Cougar student-athletes with opportunities to impact lives across the Greater Houston area.
Houston's week of service kicked off the week of giving by spending time feeding the homeless at St. Joseph House, where 100 Cougar student-athletes served meals and spent time connecting with those in the community.
Houston Athletics teamed up with the TDECU Cares Foundation to participate in an event for Kid's Meals a local non-profit dedicated to ending childhood hunger where the Cougars and TDECU staff members spent two hours packing 7,500 lunches to be distributed to young children throughout the Houston area.
The Women's Basketball team spent time visiting young patients and their families at Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital. The team brought games, took photos and brought the Cougar spirit to pediatric units, brightening the day for young patients and offering encouragement during their hospital stays.
Houston athletes volunteered with two different organizations on Friday. Members of both the Men's and Women's Golf teams partnered with Chevron for a park cleanup project at the Memorial Park Conservancy to clear trails, clean public spaces, and support local conservation and environmental sustainability efforts in one of Houston's most public parks.
Softball and Cross Country student-athletes visited MorningStar Senior Living on Friday as well, where Cougars hosted an afternoon of bingo and quality time with senior residents.
