Hsuan-Yi Chen, Sebastian Gamboa and Chi Chun Chen post wins on final day
SALT LAKE CITY – University of Houston Men's golf stars Hsuan-Yi Chen, Sebastian Gamboa and Chi Chun Chen each posted wins to lead the Cougars to a 3-2 victory over (14) Iowa State during the final day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.
Hsuan-Yi Chen led the Cougars with a 3-0 record over the three-day event while Gamboa compiled a 3-1 mark on the 7,209-yard, par-72 course. Junior Sacha Ruiz added two match wins in the tournament, which was shortened to four matches due to inclement weather on Tuesday afternoon.
Houston finished the tournament with a 2-2 record to tie for ninth with Baylor.
Arizona State and Oklahoma State tied for first while West Virginia and Texas Tech tied for third. BYU and Kansas tied for fifth with Arizona and Kansas State tying for seventh. Cincinnati and Iowa State tied for 11th while TCU and Utah tied for 13th. UCF and Colorado tied for 15th.
MATCH 4 – (15) Houston 3, (14) Iowa State 2
Starting off No. 12 against Jackson McCommon, Hsuan-Yi Chen jumped out to a 1 up lead with a par but endured back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 15-15. The Taiwan native rebounded to tie the match with another par at No. 1 but fell into another two-hole deficit with a bogey on the par-5 fourth hole and McCommon's birdie at No. 4.
However, Hsuan-Yi Chen drained back-to-back pars at Nos. 7-8 as McCommon made bogey at each hole. After halving Nos. 8-9, he took the lead for good with another par on the par-4 10th hole and clinched the match 1 up with each student-athlete making birdie on the final hole at No. 11.
Gamboa began his final match off No. 13 and won each of the first two holes to build a lead he would never surrender against Ben Wheeler. His Cyclone opponent moved to one down over the final holes, but the Merida, Mexico, native made par on the par-3 11th hole to clinch the match.
Chi Chun Chen tallied the Cougars' first point of the day with a 5&4 win over Drew Hensen. The Taiwan native won each of the first three holes starting off No. 13 and never led by fewer than three holes for the rest of the way.
Senior Grant Doggett fell to Dianchao Wu and junior Sacha Ruiz lost to Owen Sawyer, both by 1 up scores.
This was the Cougars' second straight match-play event. Houston finished fourth at the NB3 Match Play at Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., on Sept. 29-30.
