Hsuan-Yi Chen and Sacha Ruiz post wins against Kansas State on Tuesday
SALT LAKE CITY – University of Houston Men's Golf juniors Hsuan-Yi Chen and Sacha Ruiz each posted wins, but it would not be quite enough in a 3-2 loss to (10) Kansas State during the second day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Country Club on Tuesday.
The Cougars' afternoon matchup against (14) Iowa State was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Wednesday morning.
This is the Cougars' second straight match-play event. Houston finished fourth at the NB3 Match Play at Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., on Sept. 29-30.
MATCH 2 – (15) Houston 3.5, (7) Colorado 1.5
Senior Chi Chun Chen and senior Grant Doggett returned to the course early Tuesday to complete their matches, which were suspended Monday evening due to darkness.
Chen made par to win the final hole and halve the match against Colt Farrow while Doggett fell 2&1 to Ty Holbrook.
With those results, the Cougars claimed a 3.5-1.5 win over the Buffaloes.
MATCH 3 – (10) Kansas State 3, (15) Houston 2
In its first full match of the day, Houston completed Pool B play in a 3-2 loss to (10) Kansas State.
Starting off No. 15, Hsuan-Yi Chen made par and won his first two holes to start his day and never looked back in a 4&2 win over Oscar Stendahl.
Stendahl trimmed the deficit and moved to within 1 down with a par on No. 3, but Hsuan-Yi Chen birdied the next two holes to push his lead to three up and clinched the match with an eagle-3 on the 508-yard 12th hole.
Like Hsuan-Yi Chen, Ruiz used a quick start to take a 1 up win over Ville Virkkala. The Le Havre, France, native made birdie on the 171-yard, par-3 15th hole to move up to 1 up.
Virkkala tied the match with a birdie on the par-4 17th hole, but Ruiz drained two pars and a birdie to win the next three holes and never surrendered the lead again for the rest of the way.
Senior Chi Chun Chen fell to Fionn Dobbin, 3&2, while senior Sebastian Gamboa lost to Erik Holmberg, 3&2. Senior
Grant Doggett lost to Octavio Laurent, 1 up.
