Overmyer ties NCAA record, Dougherty puts name in Houston’s record book
HOUSTON – After each posted a record day against Kansas State, Houston Football's Patrick Overmyer and Liam Dougherty were named the Big 12 Conference's Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Overmyer tied the NCAA single-game tight end receiving touchdowns record with four scores against the Wildcats on Saturday. The mark was also the third most by a Cougar in program history and set the team record for most by a tight end.
The Kingwood, Texas, native moved into first place nationally among TEs with six receiving touchdowns this season in addition to 399 receiving yards, the second most in his position group nationally.
While Overmyer ran up the score on offense, Dougherty helped keep the Wildcats off the board on special teams. He launched a 74-yard punt in the second quarter, the sixth-longest punt in program history and the fifth-longest punt in the FBS this season. It also tied for the longest kick by a Big 12 punter this season.
Dougherty cemented his spot in the record books with a 59.3 punting average (178 yards on three punts) to set a new program best. He passed the previous record holder, Jimmy McClary, who recorded an average of 55.3 yards per punt with three kicks for 166 yards at Louisville in 2003.
