Cougar duo strikes for four touchdowns in 35-9 road win over Wildcats.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – University of Houston senior quarterback Conner Weigman connected with junior tight end Patrick Overmyer on four touchdown passes to lead the #22/19 Cougars to a 35-16 win over –/rv Kansas State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.Overmyer set his career high with four touchdown catches and tied the NCAA record by a tight end. He became the seventh Cougar in school history to post four touchdown receptions in a game, joining Manny Hazard (5, vs. Baylor, Oct. 7, 1989); Jason Phillips (4, at Texas, Nov. 5, 1988); Don Bass (4, vs. TCU, Oct. 30, 1976), Elmo Wright (4, vs. Wyoming, Nov. 22, 1969 and vs. Idaho, Nov. 16, 1968) and Ken Hebert (4, vs. Tampa, Oct. 29, 1966) and the first since Patrick Edwards tied Hazard's school record with TD catches against Rice (Oct. 27, 2011).
Overmyer also became the first NCAA Division I tight end to accomplish the feat since Coastal Carolina's Isaiah Likely at Arkansas State (Oct. 7, 2021). He finished the day with eight catches for 83 yards.
Weigman tossed four touchdown passes for the fourth time in his career and the second time this season and finished with 242 yards on 19-of-30 passing.
The Cougars had scoring opportunities on each of their first four possessions and six of their first seven to build a lead they would never relinquish. Six of Houston's first seven drives used at least eight plays each and consumed at least three minutes off the clock as the Cougars held the ball for nearly 10 minutes longer than the Wildcats in the win.
Houston's balanced offensive attack produced 475 yards of total offense (242 pass, 233 rush) while the Cougar defense limited the Wildcats to 299 yards, including only 183 yards through the first three quarters.
Houston's sack by senior defensive lineman Qunidario Lee and senior defensive end Latreveon McCutchin midway through the second quarter was the first sack allowed by K-State this season.
With the win, Houston improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play. The Cougars also captured their first road win against the Wildcats in the series young history. Kansas State fell to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big 12.
The Cougars took the opening kickoff and wasted little time in putting their first marks on the scoreboard. Weigman hit sophomore wide receiver Koby Young on a 36-yard pass that took the Cougars to the 1-yard line.
Four plays later, Weigman connected with Overmyer on a 1-yard touchdown for a 7-0 Houston lead with 9:20 remaining in the opening period.
Combined with his 40-yard rush midway through the first quarter, Young became the first Power 4 wide receiver with a 40+ yard rush and 35+ yard reception in the same game since Kentucky's Randall Cobb accomplished the feat against Vanderbilt in 2010.
The Wildcats posted their first points on kicker Luis Rodriguez' 29-yard field goal on the final play of the first quarter.
Houston expanded its lead to 14-3 when Weigman and Overmyer connected for the second time, this time on a 2-yard strike with 9:52 left in the first half.
Senior running back Makhi Hughes gave the Cougars a 21-3 advantage on a 13-yard scamper around the right end and a plunge into the end zone with 3:17 remaining.
Hughes finished the game with 78 rushing yards on 14 carries for a game-high 5.6 yards per rush while junior running back Re'Shaun Sanford led all players with 90 yards on 20 carries.
After forcing Kansas State to punt on its first possession of the second half, Weigman led the Cougars on an eight-play, 76-yard drive that was capped by Overmyer's 8-yard touchdown reception from Weigman with 9:23 left.
Kansas State pulled to within 28-9 on Avery Johnson's 13-yard pass to Garrett Oakley with 6:11 remaining.
Houston answered on its next drive with another touchdown from Weigman to Overmyer. The Cougars marched 67 yards in 10 plays and grabbed a 35-9 lead on Overmyer's 2-yard touchdown catch with just under a minute remaining in the third quarter.
Johnson connected with Jaron Tibbs on a 6-yard touchdown pass with less than four minutes left in the game for the final margin of victory.
