Cougars scored 17 unanswered points in final minutes to take 27-24 win at Oregon State
Oregon State appeared to seize control of the game when running back Cornell Hatcher Jr. rushed up the middle from 18 yards out for a 24-10 Beaver lead with 12:34 left in regulation.
The score remained that way until Houston took over on its 24-yard line with 8:17 remaining and launched a seven-play drive that was capped by senior quarterback Conner Weigman's 27-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Stephon Johnson for a 24-17 Oregon State lead with 5:59 left in regulation.
After the Houston defense forced the Beavers into a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, the Cougar offense worked quickly and tied the game at 24-24 when Weigman connected with senior tight end Tanner Koziol, who erupted through the middle on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 3:40 remaining in the game.
The two teams traded punts, and Oregon State had a chance to win the game on the final play of regulation. However, senior defensive back Marc Stampley II burst through the Oregon State line and blocked Cameron Smith's 46-yard field goal try to send the game into overtime.
It was the Cougars' second field goal block of the night after Latrell McCutchin Sr. stopped Caleb Ojeda's 49-yard field goal late in the first half.
Starting overtime on offense, Oregon State moved the ball and faced third-and-1 from the Houston 16. However, the Cougar defense halted two straight Beaver runs up the middle without another yard gained to force the turnover on downs.
With the Cougars taking over on offense, Weigman hit senior running back Dean Connors on a 12-yard yard pass on third-and-6 to extend the drive. Connors followed with a 5-yard run to the OSU 4 and, after Weigman took a knee to set up the field goal attempt, senior kicker Ethan Sanchez booted the game-winning 24-yard kick to stun the crowd of 29,338.
Sanchez drilled a pair of field goals against the Beavers and has nailed seven of his last eight field goal tries after going 5-of-6 against Colorado inside TDECU Stadium on Sept. 12.
With the win, Houston improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2016. Oregon State fell to 0-5.
Weigman threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-36 passing and added a 1-yard touchdown run. Junior receiver Amare Thomas led the Cougars with six receptions for 104 yards while Connors rushed for a team-high 53 yards.
Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy threw for 201 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-33 passing. Running back Cornell Hatcher Jr. added 93 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries while Trent Walker hauled in seven catches for 103 receiving yards.
Taking over deep in the red zone after Houston's first turnover of the season, Oregon State grabbed a 7-0 lead on Jake Reichle's 1-yard touchdown run with 8:16 left in the first quarter.
After forcing the Cougars to punt on their next possession, Oregon State took a 14-0 lead when Maalik Murphy hit Marquis Crosby on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 13:47 left in the first half.
From there, Houston put its first points on the scoreboard when Sanchez booted a 25-yard field goal to move the Cougars to within 14-3 with 5:47 remaining in the first half.
The Cougar defense forced the Beavers to punt on the next possession and took over on their own 40-yard line. Facing third-and-11, Weigman hit Amare Thomas on a 36-yard pass to the OSU 25 and moved the Cougars to within 14-10 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 84 seconds left in the first half.
Oregon State kicker Caleb Ojeda gave the Beavers a 17-10 lead with a 31-yard field goal with 5:31 left in the third quarter. Hatcher's 18-yard touchdown run up the middle gave Oregon State a 24-10 advantage early in the fourth to set the stage for the Cougars' late heroics.
