Cougars have yet to drop a set in 2025, sweep Bulldogs to close opening weekend in Durham
DURHAM, N.C. – The Houston Volleyball team swept its way through the season's opening weekend, capping the first trio of matches with a straight-set win over Bryant at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday morning.Â
Â
Fourteen Cougars saw action in Sunday's sweep, including three – Tenesyn Frye, Olivia Klimis and Tara Greenberry – making their collegiate debuts. The Cougars rolled throughout the weekend as Houston posted its first perfect set record through three matches in the NCAA Era (post-1981).Â
Â
Led by senior setter Lottie Scully, who posted 25 assists and accounted for 86 percent of the teams total, Houston hit .343 in the match, including a .643 mark in the opening frame. The defensive effort dominated as well, limiting Bryant to a .037 hitting percentage with a -.200 efficiency in the first set.
Â
The Cougars opened the match with a 5-1 stretch to claim the lead early. A 3-0 run later in the frame pushed the score to 11-4 before a 5-0 run further extended its edge to 22-8. Houston clinched the first, 25-12, with a block from redshirt junior Ella Wendel and sophomore Alyssa Gonzales.
Â
While Bryant kept the second set closer, Houston controlled play throughout again, never allowing a tie score or lead change in the frame. A 3-0 run put the Cougars up 6-2 followed by another 3-0 run that extended its edge to 15-9. While the Bulldogs would shrink the gap later in the set, Houston ultimately went up 2-0 with a 25-21 set win.
Â
Bryant took its first set lead of the match with a 2-1 start in the third, but the Cougars jumped ahead for good at 4-3. A 4-0 run extended Houston's lead to 15-10 and the Cougars cruised to its third consecutive sweep, 25-18.Â
