Weigman, Platt Jr. selected among 75 for nation’s top player returning from injury, illness or other hardship
HOUSTON – University of Houston linebacker Corey Platt Jr. and quarterback Conner Weigman earned spots on the 2025 College Football Comeback Player of the Year Watch List by the College Sports Communicators in association with The Associated Press and Fiesta Sports Foundation.
Â
Platt joined the Cougars from Tulane for the 2024 season but hasn't played a snap since the third quarter of the Green Wave's 2023 season opener after battling multiple injuries in 2023 and 2024. In his only full season in 2022, Platt tallied 23 tackles, two tackles for a loss, a sack and an interception.
Â
Out of high school, Platt earned three-star ratings from ESPN and 247Sports.com and was ranked as the 10th best player in Arkansas, helping guide Little Rock Christian Academy to three straight Class 5A State Championship games.
Â
Weigman, the ninth-best transfer quarterback in the 2025 class according to 247Sports, joined the Cougars following three seasons at Texas A&M. In 15 career games, he's posted a 219-for-365 (60 percent) mark with 2,694 yards and 19 touchdowns. He's also added 261 yards on the ground with two touchdowns.
Â
In his first collegiate start, he set the Aggies' true freshman record with 338 yards with a 28-for-44 line that included four touchdowns against #6 Auburn. Finishing the year with 896 passing yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions in five games, he was named an ESPN Freshman All-American in 2022.
Â
His success continued into his redshirt freshman season in 2023, where he claimed the team's starting quarterback role before being sidelined with a season-ending injury in the fourth game of the season. Closing out his time with the Aggies in 2024, Weigman played in six games and amassed 819 yards and three touchdowns but again missed significant time due to injury.
Â
Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors, and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
