Senior earns spot on watch list for nation’s most versatile player
HOUSTON – Houston Football wide receiver Mekhi Mews netted a spot on the 2025 Paul Hornung Award Watch List, the Louisville Sports Commission announced Thursday.
Â
The Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, has been awarded annually since 2010 to honor the nation's most versatile performer in FBS-level college football.
Â
In his first season with Houston in 2024, Mews paced the Cougars in all-purpose yards, amassing 607 in 12 games which included six starts. The Swiss army knife athlete amassed 253 receiving yards, 207 kick return yards, 132 punt return yards and 14 rushing yards.
Â
The team's primary punt returner, he totaled 132 yards, averaging nearly seven per return with a 75-yard touchdown punt return against Rice. The Grayson, Ga., native posted a 75.1 punt return grade from Pro Football Focus, the fourth highest in the Big 12 Conference. He was also one of five Big 12 players with a punt return TD in 2024. Mews was also a prolific kick returner, averaging nearly 26 yards per return to lead the team.
Â
His 29 receptions on the season ranked second on the team, which included four games where he led or co-led the team in the category, and he placed third in receiving yards. Both marks were also single-season bests for the wide receiver. His mark of 165 yards after catch placed second on the team and he ranked fourth with 11 first down receptions.
Â
Overall, in 30 career games, Mews has tallied 1,413 all-purpose yards (averaging 47.1 per game), led by 621 on kickoff returns. He has also gained 417 receiving yards, 362 punt return yards and 13 rushing yards. He has also scored two punt return touchdowns and caught two touchdown receptions.
