Cougars return to action vs. Iowa State in TDECU Stadium on Sept. 28
CINCINNATI (AP) – Cincinnati scored 14 first-quarter points and never looked back in taking a 34-0 win over the University of Houston Football program at Nippert Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Senior quarterback Donovan Smith threw for 73 yards on 11-of -16 passing while redshirt freshman running back Re'Shaun Sanford II added a team-high 62 rushing yards on only six carries. Junior wide receiver Joseph Manjack IV snared two passes for 51 yards.
Taking over in Houston territory after a Houston turnover, Cincinnati put the first points on the scoreboard when Brendan Sorsby connected with Xzavier Henderson on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 10:46 remaining in the opening period.
Running back Corey Kiner gave the Bearcats a 14-0 lead with a 44-yard touchdown run up the middle with 2:57 left in the first quarter.
Sorsby hit Henderson again on a 15-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter for a 21-0 Cincinnati advantage. Kicker Nathan Hawks booted a 46-yard field goal with less than two minutes remaining to give the Bearcats a 24-0 lead at the break.
Sorsby also scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Hawks added a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the final margin of victory.
Sorsby threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-15 passing. Sterling Berkhalter led Cincinnati with three catches for 60 yards while Henderson topped all players with a pair of TD receptions. Running back Corey Kiner added 78 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
