Nineteen Cougars Earn Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Honors

Cougar conference honorees shine in the classroom during first year with respective programs
HOUSTON – University of Houston Athletics has placed 19 student-athletes on the 2023-24 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Rookie Team, which honors league competitors who are new, including freshmen, at their respective institution, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Houston Men's Track and Field led the way with six representatives including Alan Bonner, Cayden Broadnax, Jairius Burton, Nicholas Byrd, Andon Mata and Derek Waite. Three Women's Track and Field student-athletes picked up conference honors including Carly Ahrens, Paris Kimble and Laney Kucera.
Three Cougars were represented in both Baseball and Softball. Baseball student-athletes included Anthony Avalos, Diego Luzardo and Ace Reese. Softball student-athletes included Bethany Aguilar, Mikalah Nitta and Jordee Wilkins.
In Men's Golf, the Cougars were represented by Chi Chun Chen and Grant Doggett. Women's Golfer Maelynn Kim was also recognized. Nina Skoric earned league honors for Houston Tennis.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team's scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport's entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
