No. 19 Volleyball Cruises to Win Over Southern Miss

Cougars continue home win streak to remain undefeated on the season
HOUSTON – The No. 19 University of Houston Volleyball team remained unbeaten on the year with a 3-1 win over Southern Miss on Saturday evening at the Fertitta Center.
In its 16th consecutive home victory, Houston (2-0) again held its opponent to a sub-.200 hitting efficiency as Southern Miss (0-2) hit .144 on the match. The Cougars also posted 10 blocks with junior Kellen Morin tallying six blocks for the third time in her career.
Graduate Abbie Jackson powered Houston's offense, posting 18 kills and a .267 hitting percentage, adding 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. Graduate Kenna Sauer earned her second consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs, while senior Kate Georgiades tallied a match-best 23 digs.
SET ONE
Houston and Southern Miss traded blows to start the match, each taking 10 of the first 20 points to make the score 10-10. The Cougars then rattled off multiple short runs to take a 21-14 lead, but the Golden Eagles fought back to a three-point deficit at 24-21. Graduate Rachel Tullos shut the door on any comebacks with her second kill of the frame to give Houston the set, 25-21.
Jackson dominated the frame for Houston, tallying seven kills and four digs while Kenna Sauer posted seven digs.
SET TWO
Houston took the lead early in the second set, earning the first four points and 12 of the first 20 to solidify its advantage. Behind three services aces from Georgiades, the Cougars surged to a 19-10 lead and kept the Golden Eagles at arm's length for the remainder of the set to go up 2-0 with a 25-18 win.
Jackson again paced the Cougar offense with five kills, while Tullos went a perfect 3-for-3 on her swings and Morin added two blocks.
SET THREE
Houston fell behind early in the third, trailing 14-10 after a 3-0 Southern Miss run. The Cougars fought back to take a 17-16 lead, but the Golden Eagles surged again to reestablish a 23-20 advantage, and while Houston would take three of the last five points, Southern Miss took the set, 25-23.
SET FOUR
The teams split the first 14 points to remain even at 7-7, but Houston took the lead behind a 3-0 run featuring three Southern Miss attack errors. The Cougars extended their lead to seven as junior Katie Corelli notched a kill to push the score to 16-9. Refusing to go quietly, Southern Miss got back to within one at 23-22, but back-to-back errors by the Golden Eagles sealed the win for Houston, 25-22.
Tullos, Morin, Jackson and Corelli all tallied two blocks in the set, with Sauer posting five kills and Georgiades earning eight digs.
UP NEXT
Houston finishes play at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup with a 5 p.m. bout with McNeese on Sunday. No. 22 USC and Southern Miss also battle at Fertitta at 11 a.m. Sunday in a neutral site matchup.
