Super senior Annie Kim fires bogey-free 66 to tie for fourth at Palouse Ridge Golf Club
UPDATED (10:16 p.m CDT, Monday May 8, 2023): This story was updated with information about the Cougars' school-record low team score in NCAA Regional play.
PULLMAN, Wash. – University of Houston Women's Golf super senior Annie Kim fired a 6-under 66 to tie for fourth, and the Cougars used a strong final 12 holes to finish the NCAA Pullman Regional First Round in sixth place with a score of 4-under 284 at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
After playing the first six holes at +10 on the 6,405-yard, par-72 course, Houston rallied to play the final 12 holes at -10 as a group with 14 birdies.
With their impressive team total, the Cougars posted a sub-par score in NCAA Regional play for the first time in school history. It topped the previous 18-hole low of 288, set during the Second Round of the 2015 NCAA San Antonio Regional in Houston's first team appearance in the NCAA postseason.
Kim's First-Round total was the second-lowest score by a Cougar in NCAA Regional play, trailing only All-American Leonie Harm's school-record 65 during the Final Round of the NCAA Austin Regional on May 9, 2018.
Beginning off No. 1, Kim quickly moved into red numbers with a birdie on the par-4 second hole. The Seoul native missed the fairway on her tee shot and was forced to hit out of high rough from far below the hole but put her approach shot within 15 feet for her birdie putt.
Kim closed her first nine with three straight birdies at Nos. 7-9 to finish at 32. Following five straight pars to begin her back nine, Kim drained birdies on No. 15 and No 17.
Making her first NCAA Regional appearance, freshman Natalie Saint Germain overcame a slow start, which saw her begin with back-to-back bogeys.
However, the Prague native rallied with a birdie on the 418-yard, par-4 third hole and returned to even par with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. Saint Germain moved under par with her third birdie of the day at No. 12 and capped the day with six straight pars to tie for 24th at 71.
Freshman Alexa Saldana was tied for 30th at 72 while Svedenskiold was tied for 53rd at 75. Junior Nicole Abelar was tied for 56th at 76.
#1 Stanford held the first-day lead with a score of 267 to finish five shots ahead of #13 USC. #32 Texas State (277), #12 Baylor (283) and Sacramento State (283) rounded out the Top-Five leaders with #24 Clemson (285), Cal Poly (286), #29 Kentucky (287), UNLV (291) and #48 North Carolina (291) completing the Top 11.
Stanford teammates Rose Zhang and Sadie Englemann stood atop the individual leaderboard with 64s while UC Riverside's Tiffany Le was third at 65. Kim joined Shannon Tan (Texas Tech), Catherine Park (USC) and Camille Boyd (Washington) in a tie for fourth at 66.
The tournament continues with the Second Round on Tuesday morning and the Final Round on Wednesday.
Houston is one of 72 teams and 36 individuals not on those teams competing in NCAA Regional play at six sites across the nation.
