After consecutive bogeys on Nos. 8-9, Gibson birdied No. 10 and quickly followed with another at No. 12 before sinking additional birdies on No. 15 and No. 1 for a 70.
In the afternoon, Gibson overcame an early birdie on Nos. 2, alternating birdies and pars over the next six holes with his final birdie of the day at No. 17 to shoot 69 and join De La Fuente in a tie for sixth.
Senior Austyn Reily posted scores of 71-72 and joined De La Fuente and Gibson among the Top-20 leaders at 143.
