Weibel Leads Men’s Golf on First Day of Big 12 Match Play Tournament

Sophomore wins both matches as Cougars upset No. 2 seed Oklahoma, tie No. 7 seed BYU
HOCKLEY, Texas – University of Houston Men's Golf sophomore Hudson Weibel won both matches to lead the Cougars to a 1-0-1 team record during the first day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament at The Clubs at Houston Oaks on Monday.
A transfer from Oklahoma, Weibel (pronounced Why-Bull) helped lead the Cougars to a 2-1-2 upset win over No. 2 seed Oklahoma in the morning. In the afternoon, he won his final hole of the day against Keanu Akina to help Houston halve the match against BYU, 2-2-1, on the 7,007-yard, par-71 course.
Super senior Austyn Reily and senior Santiago De La Fuente also were unbeaten Monday, each posting a 1-0-1 record.
This is the Cougars' first match-play action during the 2023-24 season.
The Cougars meet No. 9 seed Cincinnati at 7:45 a.m., Tuesday, off holes No. 16-18.
HOUSTON defeats OKLAHOMA, 2-1-2
In their first match of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, the Cougars enjoyed a 2-1-2 victory over No. 2 seed Oklahoma with senior All-American Santiago De La Fuente and sophomore Hudson Weibel picking up wins.
Starting off No. 7, De La Fuente fell 1 down to Drew Goodman on his first hole but proceeded to win the next three holes to take a 2 up lead he would never relinquish. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native pushed his lead to 3 up at No. 13 and eventually claimed a 4&3 win.
Like De La Fuente, Weibel fell 1 down to Stephen Campbell Jr. at No. 7 but evened the match on the next hole. The Dallas native took a 1 up lead at No. 12 before Campbell evened the match at No. 13.
Weibel regained the lead for good at No. 16 and won at No. 18 and No. 1 to take a 3 up lead on the way to a 2&1 win.
Super senior Austyn Reily tied his match against Jase Summy while junior Wolfgang Glawe tied his match against Ryder Cowan.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Chi Chun Chen dropped a 4&3 decision to Jaxon Dowell.
HOUSTON ties BYU, 2-2-1
Starting the afternoon off No. 15, Weibel was 2 up with four holes to play before Akina moved to within one after winning No. 11 and tied the match at No. 13 with one hole to go.
Fortunately, the Dallas native, Weibel made four at No. 14 to finish two shots better than his BYU opponent on the final hole.
Reily won his first match of the day with a 4&3 win over Cole Ponich. Beginning off No. 14, the Pottsboro, Texas, native won each of the first three holes to start the afternoon session and never led by fewer than two holes for the rest of the way.
Starting off No. 15, BYU's Cooper Jones won the ninth hole to tie the match with De La Fuente with the two playing to a draw for the rest of the way.
Chen fell 6&4 to Zac Jones while Glawe dropped a 2&1 decision to Max Brenchley.
FORMAT
Each team match will consist of five individual matches.
The Cougars are competing as the No. 10 seed in Pool B based on the Big 12 Coaches Rankings. Houston was joined in that pool by No. 2 seed Oklahoma and No. 7 seed BYU.
Pool A consists of No. 1 Texas, No. 8 Kansas State and No. 9 Cincinnati while Pool C includes No. 3 Baylor, No. 6 TCU, No. 11 Iowa State and No. 14 UCF. Pool D holds #4 Texas Tech, #5 Oklahoma State, #12 Kansas and No. 13 West Virginia.
Teams will advance from Pool Play based on their point totals. The bracket format begins Wednesday morning during Session 5.

UP NEXT
Following the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, the Cougars will take their holiday break.
From there, Houston returns to action to open its spring season at the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., on Jan. 29-31.
The Cougars then return to the Lone Star State to play host to the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas on Feb. 19-20.
