
Frances Leads Men’s Golf at Cabo Collegiate Invitational

Senior shoots 2-under 69 to tie for 19th after First Round; Second Round tees off Monday morning
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – University of Houston senior Alexander Frances posted a 2-under 69 to lead the Cougars and tie for 19th following Sunday's First Round of the Cabo Collegiate Invitational at Club Cove Golf Course.
Starting his day off No. 15, Frances quickly moved under par with a birdie on the 550-yard, par-5 16th hole. After a bogey on No. 18 returned him to even par, Frances rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1-2 and overcame his final bogey of the day on No. 5 with a birdie on No. 11 to join five others at 2-under.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 289 on the 6,807-yard, par-71 layout to stand in 13th in a field which features 10 of the nation's Top-50 programs. No. 3 Oklahoma State held the First-Round lead at 13-under 271 to finish one shot ahead of No. 41 Florida State.
No. 16 Mississippi (274), No. 7 Arkansas (276), No. 10 Tennessee (279), No. 8 Stanford (281), No. 21 Vanderbilt (281), No. 6 Texas Tech (281), No. 9 California (282), Baylor (285) and No. 28 Arizona (285) rounded out the Top-11 leaders.
Senior Braxton Watkins was tied for 44th at 72, while senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 52nd at 73. Junior Marcus Wochner was tied for 62nd at 75, while junior Austyn Reily finished 76th at 82.
The tournament continues with a 9 a.m. (CST) shotgun start Monday and wraps up with the Final Round on Tuesday.

From there, the team will compete at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La., on March 14-15 before returning home to play host to Houston's All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, on March 21-22.
