TAMPA, Fla. – The #22 University of Houston volleyball team clinched at least a share of the American Athletic Conference championship with a 3-1 win over South Florida in Tampa on Wednesday. It was the first conference championship for the Cougars since a regular-season title in 1999.
The title marked the first for Houston since it joined the American Athletic Conference and its fifth in program history. With the victory, Houston (28-2, 19-0 The American) extended its program-record winning streak to 20 consecutive matches.
Junior Kate Georgiades posted her third consecutive game with 20-or-more kills with 24 in the match. Senior Abbie Jackson led both teams with 12 kills, while senior Morgan Janda paced the match with 21 assists.
Junior Annie Cooke's 13 assists in the match gave her 2,541 in her career, giving her eighth on Houston's assists list.
SET ONE
Houston suffered from a slow start, falling behind early and not taking a lead until back-to-back points earned the Cougars a 12-11 advantage. With the set tied at 14-all, the Bulls used a 5-0 run to take the lead, giving them enough room to earn the set win, 25-17.
SET TWO
The momentum started to turn toward the Cougars in the second set. Houston went on a 4-0 run featuring kills from Kortlyn Henderson and Kellen Morin and an ace from Janda to take a 13-10 lead. The Cougars used a 5-0 run later in the set to extend its lead to 19-13. Fighting off a comeback attempt from USF, Houston shut the door on a 4-0 streak to win the frame, 25-17.
SET THREE
The third set started as a back-and-forth affair until a 4-1 run, capped by a block by Morin and Isabel Theut, gave Houston a 12-9 lead. With the lead holding, Houston closed the set winning 10 of the last 13 points, taking the frame, 25-18.
SET FOUR
With the conference championship within reach, Houston quickly jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the final set, using another Morin-Theut block to cap a 5-0 run. Later, Rachel Tullos tallied Houston's 10th service ace of the match to push the lead to 14-6 and force a USF timeout. Houston kept rolling, taking the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1, to clinch the conference title.
