Cougars drop 3-1 decision to host Aggies on Friday night; Return to action at 10 a.m., vs. UTSA in Reed Arena
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Houston senior outside hitter Abbie Jackson posted 11 kills with 11 digs for her second double-double of the season, but it would not be enough as host Texas A&M claimed a 3-1 win (27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20) in the Cougars' first match of the Texas A&M invitational inside Reed Arena on Friday night.

With the setback, the Cougars endured their first loss of the season, falling to 6-1. Texas A&M improved to 4-2.

In the first set, the two teams went back and forth before the Cougars took a 24-22 lead on a kill from Jackson. However, the Aggies scored five of the last six points to take the first set 27-25 and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win in Set 2.

In the third set, the teams fought to a 15-15 tie before the Cougars scored four straight points on kills by senior middle blocker Isabel Theut and freshman outside hitter Grace Wiley, an ace from sophomore setter Annie Cooke and an Texas A&M error.

The Aggies rallied to move to within 19-18, but a kill from graduate middle blocker Bridget Wallenberger and blocks from Wallenberger and junior middle blocker Rachel Tullos pushed the Cougars lead back to 23-19. Wallenberger and Jackson smashed kills to end the fourth set and trim the Aggie lead.

In the final set, Houston grabbed a 15-12 lead following blocks from Tullos and Wallenberger, but the Aggies scored eight of the next nine points to take a 20-16 lead. The Cougars continued to battle back and moved to within 22-19 on a block by Theut and Cooke, but the Aggies scored three of the final four points to clinch the match.

Senior defensive specialist Torie Frederick and sophomore libero Katie Georgiades tied for game-high honors with 12 digs, while sophomore setter Annie Cooke led Houston with 33 assists.

Lauren Davis and Morgan Christon posted 21 kills apiece to lead the Aggies to the win. Camille Conner led all players with 58 assists and led five Aggies who posted double-digit digs with 16.

Following the Texas A&M Invitational, the Cougars continue their road swing as they play at the Bama Bash on Sept. 17-18 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Houston opens that tournament at 10 a.m., Sept. 17 as it faces Western Carolina before meeting the host Crimson Tide at 6 p.m., later that evening. The Cougars close out the tournament and their non-conference schedule when they meet Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m., Saturday.

From there, the Cougars open American Athletic Conference play inside the Fertitta Center. Houston meets Tulsa on Sept. 24 before taking on Wichita State on Sept. 26.
