PALM CITY, Fla. – Competing in of the nation's top collegiate tournaments, the University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in 10th place following the first day of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at The Floridian Golf Club on Monday.
The event features nine Top-35 teams and six Top-10 squads from the latest Golfstat national rankings.
Senior Alexander Frances was tied for 29th with a score of 1-under 143 to lead the Cougars through 36 holes. After posting a 73 in the morning round, Frances sank six birdies in the afternoon session on the way to a 70.
The Stege, Denmark, native birdied three of his first four holes to start the Second Round. Overcoming three bogeys on his next four holes, Frances enjoyed back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14 and added his final birdie of the day on No. 17.
Sophomore Austyn Reily posted the team's low round of the day with a 69 in the morning and was tied for 33rd at 145. Junior Braxton Watkins was tied for 47th at 150, while senior Matt Cole stood in 57th at 154. Senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 58th at 155.
Competing as an individual, senior Logan Young recorded a 70 in the morning and was tied for 38th at 146. Senior Luke Long was tied for 42nd at 148 with sophomore Trip Morris tied for 45th at 149. Freshman Hanseung Chang was tied for 55th at 153.
No. 10 SMU held the first-day lead at 554 to finish three strokes ahead of No. 1 Florida State. No. 3 Wake Forest (556), Ohio State (558) and No. 4 Pepperdine (560) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Individually, Wake Forest's Alex Fitzpatrick posted a score of 9-under 133 to finish two shots in front of Ohio State's Maxwell Moldovan. SMU teammates Noah Goodwin and McClure Meissner and Pepperdine's Dylan Menangte were tied for third at 136.
The tournament wraps up with the Final Round beginning with a 7:30 a.m. (CDT) split-tee start Tuesday.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Marquette.
Gibson starts the day off No. 10 at 8:15 a.m. (CDT) with Cole (8:24 a.m.), Watkins (8:33 a.m.), Reily (8:42 a.m.) and Frances (8:51 a.m.) following. Long begins off No. 10 at 8:33 a.m. (CDT) with Chang (8:42 a.m.), Morris (8:51 a.m.) and Young following (9 a.m.)

Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, the Cougars will close the month of March at the N.I.T, hosted by Arizona at Omni Tucson National Resort in Tucson, Ariz., on March 20-21.
