Houston Expands Lead on Second Day of Championships

Cougars win five titles on second day of action
DALLAS – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team won five events on the second day of action at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championships.
Mykenzie Leehy, Ioanna Sacha, Katie Higgins and Katie Deininger each closed out the day with individual titles. Houston expanded its lead, closing out the day with 688 points and sits 189.5 points ahead of second-place SMU with 498.5 points.

Houston opened the day with its third relay win of the weekend, winning the 200 Medley Relay for the third straight year. Sacha, Hannah Farmer, Higgins and Kathryn Power combined for a time of 1:38.84.
Laura Garcia Marin earned her second podium finish of the weekend, placing second in the 400 Individual Medley. The freshman clocked a time of 4:19.05 and was joined by Morgan Rosas in the A-Final who placed fifth at 4:21.84. Mai Ortega Bonilla won the B-Final for the Cougars with a time of 4:21.52.
Higgins shattered SMU's streak in the 100 Butterfly, winning the event for the Cougars and earning the programs first title in the event since joining The American. She clocked a time of 53.70, just shy of the program record in the event and was closely trailed by freshman Abby Jackson who earned a second-place finish in the event at 54.27.
Leehy won the 200 Freestyle for UH, extending the Houston win streak in the event to four years. She clocked a time of 1:46.27 and was trailed by Samantha Medlin in eighth-place at 1:49.82. Elizabeth Richardson won the B-Final at 1:49.40.
The Houston freshman continued to shine as Farmer took third-place in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:02.05. She was trailed by Audrey McKinnon in fourth-place at 1:02.41. The times are the sixth and eighth fastest times in program history, respectively.
ISacha showed why she was the favorite in the 100 Backstroke, winning the title for the Cougars at 53.17 the second fastest time in program history. Power finished on the podium in third-place at 54.55, followed by Kaley Hoffman in fourth-place at 54.73.
Deininger claimed the 3-Meter title for Houston, its second title in the event in two year with a total score of 322.70. Deininger led the charge as all six Cougars advanced to the A-Final of the event. Hedda Grelz earned a third-place finish with 309.90 points, followed by Chase Farris (4th; 307.25), Emilia Waters (6th; 301.35) and Jolie Blodgett (7th; 287.70). Makayla Wallar rounded out the field for UH in eighth-place at 279.85.
Houston closed out the day with its fourth relay win of the weekend, securing its fourth straight title in the 800 Freestyle Relay. Garcia Marin, Medlin. Richardson and Leehy combined for a time of 7:13.86 in the event.
