DALLAS – University of Houston junior Andrew Gibson continued his 2019 fall season with a 3-under 68 to tie for second following the First Round at the Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Perthshire, Scotland, native drained six birdies with only a pair of bogeys to help lead the Cougars to a fifth-place team finish after the first 18 holes. He joined Jake Benson (Rice) and Shane Muldowney (UC Davis) in a tie for second, one stroke behind leader Alex del Rey of Arizona State.
The Cougars opened with a team total of even-par 284 to stand five strokes behind first-day leaders SMU and Arizona State.
UC Davis (281) and Little Rock (282) rounded out the Top-Five leaders with Rice (286), UTSA (287), Ball State (287), Denver (291), Kansas State (291) and Sam Houston State rounding out the Top 10.
Starting his day off No. 10, Gibson sank four birdies during his first seven holes with only a bogey on No. 12 to blemish his scorecard. He wasted little time in moving into red numbers with a birdie on No. 11 and, after his lone bogey on the front nine, returned to even par with a birdie at No. 13.
Gibson followed with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15-16 and, after a bogey on No. 2, seven pars with his final birdie of the day at No. 7.
His 68 was a personal 18-hole low, topping his 70 at the Final Round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Hawai'I on Nov. 4, 2018.
Frances enjoyed a pair of birdies each on his front nine and back nine. Starting off No. 10, the Stege, Denmark, native made birdie on No. 12 and followed that three holes later with another one on the par-4 15th hole.
After a bogey on No. 15 and five straight pars, Frances drained another birdie on the fourth hole and closed out his day in red numbers with his final birdie on the 570-yard, par-5 sixth hole.
He joined SMU teammates Mac Meissner and Justin Thompson and UC Davis' Thomas Hutchison in a tie for fifth through 18 holes.
Junior Luke Long was tied for 25th at 72, while senior Matt Cole was tied for 66th at 75. Senior Logan Young finished the first day in a tie for 73rd at 76.
The three-day, 54-hole event continues with an 8 a.m., split-tee start Monday and wraps up with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
