Cougars fall to Arizona State and Texas A&M CC
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team began its 2019 campaign on Friday at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup with a pair of matches against Arizona State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi inside the Fertitta Center.
The Cougars (0-2) opened the day falling to the Sun Devils, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 21-25) before dropping their contest with the Islanders, 3-0 (25-27, 18-25, 23-25).
GAME 1: Houston 1, ASU 3
Set 1
The Cougars came out firing, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, forcing Arizona State to call an early timeout. After the Sun Devils responded with a run of their own, junior setter Abby Irvine dished out an assist to senior outside hitter Megan Duncan to tie the score at 14. Houston kept itself within striking distance throughout the set, but Arizona State edged the Cougars 25-23 to take a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2
A pair of service aces from Duncan kept the score close to start off the second frame, but the Sun Devils began to pull away midway through, resulting in Houston calling a timeout, trailing by six. The Cougars never backed down though, as a kill from sophomore middle blocker Kendall Haywood tied the score at 22, as Houston carried that momentum all the way to its 25-23 set victory.
Set 3
The Sun Devils came out of the intermission on a roll, claiming the third set 25-16 to retake the match lead, 2-1.
Set 4
Haywood came out of a Cougars' timeout midway through the set and to bring Houston within five with her kill. Freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos continued to put her defense on display with one of her solo blocks, but the Sun Devils pulled away late to win the set and close out the match with a 3-1 victory.
GAME 2: Houston 0, TAMCC 3
Set 1
The Cougars came out strong, as a kill from Haywood gave Houston an early three-point advantage in the contest. After the Islanders responded with a run of their own to take the lead, sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut put up a block at the net to bring the Cougars deficit to just three. Houston was able to climb back and tie the score, thanks to a kill from Duncan, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome, as the Texas A&M Corpus Christi took the first set 27-25.
Set 2
Haywood made the Islanders pay for their overpass, as she put down a monster kill to tie the score at 10. Once Corpus Christi reclaimed the lead and went ahead by six, Houston was forced to call a timeout, but couldn't claw their way back, falling to the Islanders 25-18 in the set and 2-0 in the match.
Set 3
After Houston opened the set with a five-point advantage, the Islanders came back to tie the score, but a backrow kill from freshman Abbie Jackson gave the Cougars a one-point lead. From there, the two teams found themselves in a back-and-forth battle, but it was the Islanders who came out on top 25-23, as they won the match 3-0.
