
Comeback Effort Not Enough for Houston

Cougars compete in 13th five-set match of season
HOUSTON – After spotting UConn a 2-0 match lead, the University of Houston Volleyball team stormed back to force a fifth set, but could not seal the comeback victory, as the Cougars fell to the Huskies (23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 12-15) on Sunday afternoon inside the Fertitta Center.
The five-set thriller marked the 13th of its kind this season for the Cougars (15-14, 9-5 American), who are now 8-5 is such contests. Sunday's match also found a pair of double-doubles recorded for the Cougars, as senior outside hitter Claire Karsten and sophomore setter Kelsey Childers each tallied one.
Karsten's double-double (12 kills, 14 digs) marked the first of her career, while Childers' (44 assists, 12 digs) was the third of hers. The 44 assists from Childers is also a career high. She has now set a new career mark in each of her past three matches, averaging 10.0 assists per set during that stretch.
Senior libero Katie Karbo put herself one step closer towards the American Athletic Conference all-time digs record, as her match-high 27 digs puts her 22 away from the historic mark.
Offensively, sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut paced the way Houston, notching a team-high 14 kills. She was joined by Karsten and senior outside hitter Megan Duncan (11 kills) as those with double-double kills on the afternoon.

Set 1
With Houston holding a one-point lead to start things off, a kill from Theut sparked a 7-2 run from the Cougars, forcing the Huskies to call a timeout, trailing 13-7. After UConn closed the gap to a pair, Houston stretched its edge to three and reached the 20-point mark first, courtesy of a kill from Karsten. From there, the Huskies rallied off a 6-3 run to tie the score at 23, resulting in a Cougar timeout, but the break in action wouldn't be enough stop the momentum, as the Huskies scored the final two points of the set to win the frame 25-23.
Set 2
After Houston came out to an early 4-2 lead, UConn responded with seven unanswered points to claim a five-point lead force a timeout from the Cougars. The Huskies maintained their five-point advantage until back-to-back kills from Duncan cut the Cougars' deficit to just a score at 13-12. Houston kept itself within striking distance until back-to-back solo blocks from Theut put the Cougars out in front 19-18, forcing a UConn timeout. Coming out of the break, the Huskies scored five of the next seven points, which proved to be the difference in the set, as UConn took the second frame by another score of 25-23.
Set 3
UConn was forced to call a timeout midway through the set, after Houston came out of the intermission firing and jumped out to a 16-8 lead. The Cougars used the momentum they had already built all the way to cruise to their 10-point, 25-15 set three victory.
Set 4
The break in between sets was no struggle for the Cougars, who came out and scored the first six points of the set to force another early timeout from UConn. A kill from Theut put Houston ahead by seven and following a kill from Karsten, the Huskies had to call another timeout and talk things over, as they trailed 16-9. After the Huskies managed to close the gap to four, the Cougars responded and finished the set on a 6-3 run to win 25-17 and force the decisive fifth set.
Set 5
Houston found the first lead of the fifth and built itself an 8-5 advantage, thanks to a dump over the net from Childers, but UConn climbed itself over the hurdle and never looked back, as the Huskies closed out the set on a 10-4 run to win the frame 15-12 and seal the 3-2 match victory.
