Houston Kicks off Season with Aggie Opener

Cougar men finish third, women fourth in 2018’s first cross country meet
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Cross Country teams opened the 2018 season at the Aggie Opener, hosted by Texas A&M on Friday in College Station, Texas.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougar women began the 2018 campaign with a 4,100-meter race around Watts Cross Country Course. Houston was led by junior Jahnavi Schneider, who crossed the line in 15:15.0 to place 13th overall.
A pair of freshmen finished second and third for the Cougars, including Regan Lobodzinski who ran the race in 15:29.5 to take 17th, while Megan DeRouen placed 33rd in 16:15.7. Sophomore Brianna Nolen ran 16:37.6 to place 43rd, while Claudia Santos rounded out the scoring for Houston with a 47th-place finish in 17:11.2.
The Cougar women finished fourth overall with 103 points.
A trio of freshmen led the Cougar men to a third place finish, Friday, including redshirt freshman Nicholas Fernandes, who completed the 6,000-meter race as the runner up in 18:42.0. True freshmen Devin Vallejo-Bannister and Gabe Armijo posted their first career top-10 finishes, with Vallejo-Bannister running 18:59.6 to take seventh, and Armijo finishing within seconds of his teammate at 19:04.3 to place eighth.
Junior Cameron Laverty posted a top-20 finish of his own, when he crossed the line 19th in 19:28.8, while senior Aaron Hurd wrapped up the scoring for the Cougars after running 20:25.3 to finish 40th.
The Cougar men finished third overall with 59 points.
