Houston begins its season 4-0 for the first time since 2001
HIGHLIGHTS
HOUSTON – For the first time since 2001, the University of Houston Volleyball team is off to a 4-0 start as the Cougars swept Prairie View A&M (0-4) on Tuesday night 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-11). In its first four matches of the 2018 campaign, Houston has now swept three of its opponents, winning 12 out of 14 sets in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –
Much like the Cougars' previous three matches, Houston jumped out to an 11-4 lead on PVAMU, where junior outside hitter Megan Duncan made her presence felt early at the service line, recording two aces during that run. By the time Houston came out on top with its 25-10 first set victory, the Cougar offense posted a .440 hitting percentage, which was led by sophomore Gabi Zelaya who slammed home five kills in the opening frame.
Â
Set 2 –
PVAMU wasted no time showing its fight to start the second set, jumping out to an early 7-3 lead, but that deficit proved to be no match for Houston as the Cougars then went on a remarkable 14-4 run that was capped off with 10 unanswered points. During that run, five different cougars were responsible for points via kills or aces. With Houston up 17-11 after the run, the Cougars never looked back from that moment as they went on to win the set 25-16 to go up 2-0 at intermission.
Â
Set 3 –
Another strong opening to the set quickly put Houston up 14-4 midway through the frame, which set the tone for its 25-11 set victory and sealing the 3-0 match sweep over the Lady Panthers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

The Cougars will take their undefeated, 4-0, record on the road and travel to Lafayette, Louisiana for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic. The two-day event is slated for Aug. 31 - Sept. 1.
