PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- University of Houston junior Michael Perras posted his second straight round of par or better to stand in a tie for third at 1-under 141 following the Second Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships on Monday afternoon.
Competing on the 7,125-yard, par-71 Copperhead Course, Perras led the Cougars with a 70 on Monday, a day after finishing with a 71. The Deer Park, Texas, native enjoyed a pair of birdies with only one bogey in the Second Round.
After starting the day with four straight pars, Perras sank his first birdie on the 570-yard, par-5 fifth hole but moved back to even par when he made bogey on the final hole of his front nine.
Perras recovered with eight straight pars to start the back nine and made birdie on his final hole of the day to move into a tie for third with UCF's Manuel Elvira and UConn's Jimmy Hervol.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 297 and stood in fourth with a 36-hole total of 585. USF held the Second-Round lead at 570 with Cincinnati moving into second at 579 and No. 46 UCF checking in at 583.
Following the Cougars, UConn (587), Memphis (594), SMU (595), Temple (598) and East Carolina (602) rounded out the field.
Junior Papito Gonzalez, who opened the tournament with a 68 to hold the First Round lead, joined Perras among the top-10 leaders, tying for seventh at 144. Senior Matt Scobie was tied for 24th at 150, while sophomore Matt Williams was tied for 29th at 151. Redshirt freshman Zach Tracy was tied for 41st at 155.

FINAL-ROUND PAIRINGS
Tuesday's Final Round tees off with a 7 a.m. (CDT) start. The Cougars will compete in groups with UConn and Memphis off No. 1.
Tracy begins at 7 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday with Williams (7:10 a.m. CDT), Scobie (7:20 a.m. CDT), Gonzalez (7:30 a.m. CDT) and Perras (7:40 a.m. CDT) following.
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
The Cougars have enjoyed tremendous success in conference championships with 20 team titles and 20 individual crowns during the program's history.
Houston swept the 2013 Conference USA Championships with a team score of 857 and saw Roman Robledo earn medalist honors with a score of 8-under 208.
The Cougars have finished among the top-four leaders in each of the three previous American Championships appearances, including a third-place showing in 2016. Perras and Vincent Martino posted scores of even-par 216 to tie for ninth on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch a year ago.

With the completion of The American Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate. The NCAA Selection Show will air at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 4, on Golf Channel.
