PALM HARBOR, Fla. â€" University of Houston junior Papito Gonzalez led all players with a 68 Sunday to lead the Cougars into second place following the First Round at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Innisbrook Golf Resort.
Gonzalez drained four birdies in Sunday's opening round and was one of only two players to finish the first 18 holes under par.
After starting with a birdie on the par-5 first hole, the McAllen, Texas, native drained another birdie on No. 8 and then enjoyed back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14. Although he endured his lone bogey of the day on No. 16, Gonzalez closed out his day with consecutive pars for his fourth round in the 60s this season.
Gonzalez stood one stroke ahead of UCF's Manuel Elvira on the individual leaderboard.
As a team, the Cougars finished with a score of 4-over 288, one stroke behind USF and one stroke ahead of No. 46 UCF. Cincinnati (291), Memphis (294), UConn (295), Temple (298), East Carolina (299) and SMU (300) rounded out the field.
Junior Michael Perras joined Gonzalez among the top-three leaders, finishing at even-par 71 to tie for third. The Deer Park, Texas, native drained two birdies on his front nine and added another birdie on the 575-yard, par-5 11th hole.
Perras was joined at even par with UConn's Jimmy Hervol and USF teammates Jimmy Jones and Priyanshu Singh.
Competing in his final American Athletic Conference Championships, senior Matt Scobie posted a 73 and was tied for 11th. Redshirt freshman Zach Tracy was tied for 30th at 76, while sophomore Matt Williams was tied for 35th at 77.

SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
Monday's First Round tees off with a 7 a.m. (CDT) start. The Cougars will compete in groups with No. 46 UCF and USF beginning at 7:50 a.m. (CDT) Monday off No. 1.
Williams begins at 7:50 a.m. (CDT) Monday with Tracy (8 a.m. CDT), Scobie (8:10 a.m. CDT), Perras (8:20 a.m. CDT) and Gonzalez (8:30 a.m. CDT) following.
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
The Cougars have enjoyed tremendous success in conference championships with 20 team titles and 20 individual crowns during the program's history.
Houston swept the 2013 Conference USA Championships with a team score of 857 and saw Roman Robledo earn medalist honors with a score of 8-under 208.
The Cougars have finished among the top-four leaders in each of the three previous American Championships appearances, including a third-place showing in 2016. Perras and Vincent Martino posted scores of even-par 216 to tie for ninth on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch a year ago.
