Houston Falls to Tulsa in Five Sets

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-16, 18-25, 25-18, 18-25, 7-15) to Tulsa on Friday night inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Golden Hurricane improved to 13-2 overall and 2-1 in league action.
Senior setter Keandra McCardell posted her fourth double-double of the season and 24th of her career behind a 42-assist, 18-dig effort. The 18 digs also tie her career high.
Junior outside hitters Brianna Lynch and Sarah Afflerbaugh each posted double figure kills. Lynch rattled off a career-high 17 kills, while Afflerbaugh finished with 10. Senior middle blocker Hunter Wise finished with nine kills and four blocks.
Freshman libero Katie Karbo anchored the back row with 21 digs. Freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan finished a career-high 13 digs and eight kills. Sophomore middle blocker Chenelle Walker had five blocks and five kills.
Tulsa's Rebecca Reeve recorded a double-double performance with 13 digs and 11 kills. Trinity Alualu and Erica Bohannon landed double digit kills, posting 16 and 15, respectively. Setters Ashton Anderson and Mariah Pardo each registered 22 assists. Anderson also finished with 15 digs, while libero Brooke Berryhill dug up 21 balls. Jaime Rahilly and Alualu each recorded four blocks.
Houston led the Golden Wave 9-8 in blocks. Tulsa edged the Cougars .186-.168 in attack percentage, holding a 56-51 advantage in kills and 85-82 in digs.
Houston rattled off the first five points of the match and got five kills from Afflerbaugh and four from Lynch in cruising to a 25-16 victory in the opening set.
In the second set, four quick attack errors helped Tulsa take an 8-4 lead. However, four Golden Hurricane attack errors allowed Houston to close the gap at 11-10. From there, both teams traded points until Tulsa used a 6-1 run to take a 25-18 set win into the break.
The Cougars turned in a .368 clip and got five more kills from Lynch in taking the third set, 25-18.
In the fourth set, the Golden Hurricane flipped the script with a 25-18 victory of their own to keep the match alive.
Tied 4-4 in the fifth set, Tulsa closed out the match on an 11-3 run to seal the comeback.
