SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. â€" Four Cougars posted par rounds or better to move the Cougars higher in the team standings following the Second Round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club.
Sophomore Matt Williams enjoyed a career-low-tying 68 on the 7,147-yard, par-71 course to lead the Cougars, while junior Papito Gonzalez added a 70 and junior Michael Perras and senior Matt Scobie each chipped in with even-par 71s.
With those performances, the Cougars moved higher into seventh place in the team standings with a two-day total of 561.
Starting Saturday's round on No. 10, Williams began with a birdie on the par-4, 449-yard hole. Although he gave that back with birdie on No. 11, the Calgary, Alberta, native rebounded with five straight birdies and added his second birdie of the day on the par-5 17th hole.
Williams began his back nine with birdies on Nos. 1-2 and closed out his day with his final birdie on No. 9 to surge into a tie for 37th at even-par 142. Saturday's round equaled his previous low of 68 during the Final Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on Oct. 13, 2015.
Gonzalez, who led the Cougars with a 67 in Friday's First Round, posted five birdies in his Second Round. After four straight pars to start his day, the McAllen, Texas, native overcame a challenging stretch midway through his front nine, which saw him with a triple bogey on the par-3 14th hole and a bogey on No. 15.
Fortunately, Gonzalez rallied to play bogey free golf for the rest of the day . He sank consecutive birdies on Nos. 16-17 and made birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 7 on the back nine to finish with a 70 day for the day and stand in a tie for 11th at 137.
Perras enjoyed four birdies Saturday and overcame double bogey-bogey on Nos. 4-5 to sink two birdies in his final five holes on the way to a 71. The Deer Park, Texas, native was tied for 47th at 143.
Scobie was steady throughout his Second Round. The Ajax, Ontario, native enjoyed 16 birdies with his lone birdie coming on No. 17 for a 71 of his own. He was tied for 56th at 146.
Senior Emmett Oh was tied for 22nd at 140. Playing as an individual, sophomore Jacob Veerman was tied for 83rd at 152.
