BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of Houston Women's Golf program posted its best score of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday, but it would not be quite enough as the Cougars fell shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Competing on the 6,285-yard, par-72 course at University Club, the Cougars were 7-under-par through their first nine and finished the day with a score of 290 to finish the three-day, 54-hole Regional at 885.
Unfortunately, BYU used a birdie on its final hole to break a tie with the Cougars and finished at 884. With Houston and BYU tied at +21 and only one BYU player left on the course, BYU's Lea Garner stuck her approach shot within eight feet of the flag and made her birdie try to break the tie and clinch the Regional's sixth and final spot for the NCAA Championships.
The Cougars, who are at No. 33 in the latest Golfstat national rankings, entered the Final Round in eighth place in the team standings but used an outstanding front nine to put themselves in contention. After making 11 birdies as a team in Friday's Second Round and 13 total in the First Round, the Cougars combined to sink 15 birdies through their first nine holes Saturday.
With her outstanding play all week, Houston freshman Leonie Harm was one of three individuals to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Gerlingen, Germany, native posted a 69 for the second time at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday and finished in a tie for seventh overall with a score of 1-under-par 215.
She joined LSU's Elise Bradley and Arizona State's Linnea Strom as individual qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. Harm, who joined the Cougars at the semester break, will be the Cougars' first representative at the NCAA Championships.
Harm endured a roller-coaster Final Round and saw her birdies come in bunches. After starting her day with a bogey on No. 1, she rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3.
She moved back to even par with a bogey on No. 5 but sank birdies on three of her next four holes to cap her front.
Harm's back nine started like the front nine ended with another birdie on the 406-yard, par-four 10th hole. She endured her second bogey of the day on the 11th hole but sank two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on Nos. 13-15 to stand at 4-under-par through 16 holes.
Although she dropped a stroke with her final bogey on No. 17, she tied the Cougars' record for low round in an NCAA Regional with her 69, equaling her First-Round mark.
No. 5 Florida and No 24 South Carolina tied for the team championship with a score of 857 and were joined by No.13 Washington (863), No. 4 Duke (870), No. 20 Oregon (882) and No. 37 BYU ((884) as qualifiers for the NCAA Championships.
Arizona State (891), East Carolina (904), Harvard (904) and host LSU (905) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Houston sophomore Yuka Kajiki tied for 25th with a score of 221, while senior and three-time All-American Athletic Conference honoree Raegan Bremer -- competing in her final collegiate event -- tied for 35th at 73.
Sophomore Megan Thothong tied for 42nd with a score of 226 and joined with Bremer for the Cougars' second-lowest team score Saturday at 73. Junior Emily Gilbreth tied for 64th at 232.
South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh earned medalist honors at 9-under-par 207 to finish three strokes ahead of Florida's Karolina Vickova. Charlotte Thomas of Washington placed third at 211 with Garner, LSU's Elise Bradley, and Duke's Sandy Choi tying for fourth at 213.
NCAA REGIONALS HISTORY
This marked the second straight season in which the Cougars competed in the NCAA Regionals. Houston has competed in the NCAA postseason every year in which it was eligible for team competition after starting the program with four individuals in 2013-14.
A year ago, the Cougars played as the No. 12 seed at the NCAA San Antonio Regional, finishing 13th with a score of 881.
Bremer, Gilbreth, Kajiki and Thothong competed in the second NCAA Regionals of their collegiate careers, while Harm made her NCAA postseason debut.
At the 2015 NCAA San Antonio Regional, Gilbreth led the team individually with a score of 218 and tied with Thothong for the team's low round of the tournament with a 71 in the Second Round.
PLAYING at the UNIVERSITY CLUB
This was the second time that Houston competed in Baton Rouge, La., in 2015-16. The Cougars finished seventh at the LSU Tiger Classic on March 20-22 22 with Bremer and Harm earning top-20 finishes.
The Cougars were one of five teams in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional who previously played at the University Club in 2015-16. Houston joins Duke, NC State, Denver and host LSU.
In addition, Houston was one of 12 teams in the NCAA Regional field who had previous experience at their Regional site this season. In addition to Duke, NC State, Denver and LSU at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, both Texas and Texas A&M faced one another in match-play on Sept. 6, 2015, at Traditions Club in Baton Rouge, La.
Stanford, Colorado, San Jose State, USC and Pepperdine also played at the Stanford Golf Course at various times earlier this season.
