The Cougars posted a score of 3-under-par 285 in the morning round but slipped in the afternoon with a score of 292 for a total of 577 on the 7,005-yard, par-72 course.
Redshirt freshman Logan Davis posted back-to-back sub-par rounds to stand in a tie for 12th at 4-under-par 140. The Atascocita, Texas, native opened the tournament with a 71 in the morning in a round that featured four birdies and an eagle on the 563-yard, par-5 17th hole.
In the afternoon session, Davis started his round on No. 11 and got off to a great start with three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17. He stumbled a bit with three birdies on the first five holes of the front nine but added another eagle on the 565-yard, par-5 sixth hole and a birdie on his final hole of the day for a 69.
Host and 35th-ranked Augusta held the first-day lead at 558 to stand three strokes in front of No. 2 Texas and No. 4 Illinois. No. 14 USF (562), No. 3 Georgia (569), No. 40 New Mexico (572), No. 44 Tennessee (572), Kennesaw State (576) and No. 38 Pepperdine (576) rounded out the top-9 leaders.
Sophomore Michael Perras opened the tournament with a 69 of his own in the morning and was tied for 21st at 143. Senior Vincent Martino was tied for 39th at 146, while senior Blair Hamilton was tied for 57th at 150. Sophomore Papito Gonzalez was tied for 70th at 154.
Texas' Beau Hossler held the first-day lead at 8-under-par 136 and was one stroke ahead of Robin Petersson (Augusta), Chad Merzbacher (Tennessee), Manuel Elvira (UCF) and Claudio Correa (USF).
FINAL-ROUND PAIRINGS
Sunday's Final Round begins at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) Sunday with a split-tee start off No. 1 and No. 10. The Cougars will compete in threesomes off No. 10 with student-athletes from Coastal Carolina and UCF.
Gonzalez starts for the Cougars at 7:45 a.m. (CDT), Sunday, with Hamilton (7:55 a.m. CDT), Martino (8:05 a.m. CDT), Perras (8:15 a.m. CDT) and Davis (8:25 a.m. CDT) following.

Following the 3M Augusta Invitational, the Cougars close out the regular season at The Maxwell Intercollegiate on April 16-17 at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.
From there, the team enters the postseason when it competes at the American Athletic Conference Championships on May 1-3 on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch in LeCanto, Fla.
