LAREDO, Texas - University of Houston Men's Golf sophomore Michael Perras finished a rain-shortened Border Olympics with a score of 7-under-par 137 to tie for second and lead the Cougars to a second-place finish on Saturday afternoon at Laredo Country Club.
Originally scheduled for 54 holes over two days, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes with 18 holes on Friday and the final 18 holes Saturday. However, additional rain forced play to be suspended at 4:10 p.m., Friday.
The First Round resumed at early Saturday morning with continuous play proceeding into the Second and final round.
Perras finished the First Round with a score of 67, thanks to six birdies and only one bogey. In the Second Round, the Deer Park, Texas, native drained an eagle his second hole of the round and used a steady round with only one birdie and one bogey for the rest of the day.
As a team the Cougars posted back-to-back sub-par rounds with scores of 283 and 281 to finish with a total of 564. Baylor captured the team championship with a score of 556 with Rice (567), Sam Houston State (569) and Louisiana-Lafayette (569) following the Cougars.
McNeese State (572) Sacramento State (574), UTSA (577) Texas State (577) and Notre Dame (579) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Perras was one of four Cougars to finish among the top-14 individual leaders. Senior All-American Blair Hamilton opened the tournament with a 68 in the First Round. Standing at 2-over-par through 12 holes, the Burlington, Ontario, Canada, capped his first round with six consecutive birdies.
Hamilton drained three birdies in the Final Round on the way to a 71 and tied for sixth at 139.
Sophomore Papito Gonzalez fired consecutive 70s and tied for eighth at 140. The McAllen, Texas, native drained four birdies in his First Round and added five birdies in the Second Round for his third top-10 finish in his last four tournaments.
Sophomore Joshua Gibbons recorded a 68 in his First Round with four birdies in a 5-hole stretch and tied for 14th at 141. Senior Vincent Martino tied for 22nd at 143 with a Final-Round 69, while sophomore Alan De Bondt and redshirt freshman Logan Davis each tied for 40th at 145. Junior Emmett Oh tied for 52 at 147.
While the Laredo, Texas, area averages about 20 inches of rainfall per year, Thursday saw two inches of rain fall in the area with more hitting the area Friday. Most teams were about halfway through their First Rounds when play was suspended.
