Bouter Sweeps Diving Events; Cougars Conclude Nationals

ATLANTA and COLLEGE STATION, Texas â€" Junior diver Micaela Bouter swept the diving events at Texas A&M dual meet in College Station, Texas as the Cougar swimmers wrapped up competition at the AT&T Winter National Championships at the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta on Saturday.
"I am pleased with the overall effort for the last three days," Swimming & Diving Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka said. "We came to this meet to learn and gain experience in the midst of some heavy training. We walked away with a clearer picture of things we need to address moving forward. Now we have to work with a clear objective as we move into the championship phase of the season."
DIVING
The Houston divers concluded the 2016 portion of their competition season with Bouter sweeping the diving events. The Johannesburg, South Africa native, remains unbeaten in the 1-meter springboard event after netting a score of 291.90 to soundly beat the field. The junior followed up with another first place finish in the 3-meter event with a score of 315.08. Freshman Lauren Burrell finished fourth in the 1-meter event with a score of 256.50 and fifth in the 3-meter netting a score of 261.46. Fellow freshman Claire Liptak placed sixth in the 1-meter nabbing a score of 201.44.
"We had a great meet," diving coach Bob Gunter said. "It was great to have such a high level of competition to finish the fall semester. It puts us in great shape to build towards the spring semester and the conference meet."
SWIMMING
In the 100-yard freestyle, junior Ksenia Yuskova and freshman Zarena Brown earned second swims for the second and third consecutive evening, respectively. The Miami (Fla.) transfer Yuskova finished second in the C finals touching the wall at 50.49 while Brown placed eighth with a time of 52.37.
Eleanna Koutsouveli finished 19th during prelims in the 200-yard backstroke to move onto finals. The Athens, Greece native placed fifth in the C final with a time of 1:59.16. Freshman Peyton Kondis also earned a second swim in the 200-yard breaststroke. Kondis swam a 2:17.07 to finish seventh in her heat.
In the 1,650-year freestyle sophomore Hannah Herbst finished 19th overall. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native captured a top-20 finish touching the wall at 17:05.78.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will head to Florida for winter camp training before opening the 2017 portion of their schedule in dual meet action against Incarnate Word on Jan. 10 in San Antonio, Texas.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the second consecutive year as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 15-18, 2017. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 15-18, 2017 in Indianapolis, Ind.
