Volleyball Wins Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic

LAFAYETTE, La. â€" The University of Houston Volleyball program claimed the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic title with a four-set win (22-25, 30-28, 25-17, 25-20) over host Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars move to 5-1 on the season, the best start for the program in since the 2013 season. This is the second time in three year the Cougars have been crowned tournament champs for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic.
Errors plagued the Cougars first set as they fell 25-22 to the Ragin' Cajuns. But, the Cougars rallied to take three straight sets to win the match and the tournament title. The Cougar fourth set was their best performance as they hit .326 as a team with 20 kills. Houston racked up 95 digs, a season best for the Cougars.
Freshman outside hitter Brookah Palmer was named MVP of the tournament while senior libero Olivia O'Dell and sophomore setter Keandra McCardell were named to the all-tournament team.
Junior right side Hunter Wise led the Cougars with 16 kills, hitting .300. Claire McCown followed with 15 kills (.333) in her debut with the Cougars. Sophomore Shelby Harper tallied a season best 14 kills (.257 hitting percentage) against the Ragin' Cajuns.
O'Dell tied her career high of 29 digs in the four-set win. This is the third consecutive game with 20+digs for the senior. Setters McCardell and Sophie Paine recorded double-doubles. This match marked McCardell's third double-double of the season as she posted 31 assists and 14 digs. Paine reached 28 assists and 10 digs in her first double-double of the season.

Houston Volleyball wraps up its road tournament stretch with the North Texas Invitational Friday and Saturday Sept. 11-12 in Denton, Texas. The Cougars open the tournament with a match against Abilene Christian at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Cougars play Boise State at 1 p.m. and close the tournament with a 7 p.m. match against host North Texas.
