MISSOURI CITY, Texas â€" Firing the best team score for the second straight round, the University of Houston Men's Golf program capped an impressive stay at the HBU Husky Intercollegiate by sweeping the team and individual championships on Tuesday afternoon at Quail Valley Golf Club.
The Cougars posted a team score of 1-over-par 284 and finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 851 to finish 22 strokes ahead of second-place finisher UT Rio Grande Valley on the 6,931-yard, par-71 El Dorado Course. Florida Atlantic finished third at 874 with host Houston Baptist (875) and Incarnate Word (882) rounding out the top-5 team leaders.
"We did a tremendous job," seventh-year Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke said. "Four of our five guys had sub-par rounds this week, and that's a sign of a good team effort. "
Although he shot a 1-over-par 72 in Tuesday's Final Round, sophomore Michael Perras earned the first collegiate individual title of his career with a score of 8-under-par 205. The Deer Park, Texas, native became only the fourth player in school history to shoot a 63 with his total in the First Round and finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up Scott Shaw of Incarnate Word.
"I was really pleased with the way Michael played and the way he separated himself from the field. That's a testament to his ability and what he is capable of doing," Dismuke said. "(On Monday morning during round of 63), he hit a lot of quality shots and putted the ball well. Michael just put the ball in good situations and then capitalized on them."
This was the 11th team championship for the Cougar, while Perras became the sixth different Cougar to win the 11th individual crown under Dismuke's tenure. He also became the second Cougar in 2015-16 to earn medalist honors in two tournaments to date, joining senior Vincent Martino who won the 2015 Northern Intercollegiate on Sept. 12-13.
Making his collegiate debut, redshirt freshman Logan Davis enjoyed the team's low round of the day with a career-best 67 and moved up in the final individual standings into third place with a score of 1-under 212.
"Logan had a terrific performance for his first collegiate event," Dismuke said.
Like Davis, redshirt freshman Matt Williams finished among the top-10 leaders with a score of 219. Both Davis and Williams sat out the 2014-15 season as redshirts with the Cougars.
Sophomore Papito Gonzalez tied for 20th with a 222, while sophomore Joshua Gibbons tied for 23rd at 223.
The HBU Husky Intercollegiate was a recent addition to the team's schedule and not published in earlier versions.
