MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Houston Women's Golf program opens its 2015-16 season Monday when it tees off at the Minnesota Invitational at Minikhada Club.
Now in only its third year of existence, the Cougars will compete at the Minnesota Invitational for the first time on the 6,119-yard, par-72 layout. Houston will square off against Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Purdue, East Carolina, Kent State, TCU, GRU Augusta, Kentucky and host Minnesota.
The team will compete in 36 holes Monday with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday. Fans can follow live scoring by visiting Golfstat.com and following the appropriate links or by clicking here.
This will be part of a busy week for the Cougars, who tee off at Vanderbilt's Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., on Friday, for a three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Despite the program's young age, Houston has enjoyed tremendous success quickly under third-year Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell. A year ago, the Cougars competed in their first year of team eligibility. Despite the program's young age, Houston earned its first NCAA postseason berth with a bid to the NCAA San Antonio Regional.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Earlier this week, Chadwell released the team's inaugural starting lineup for 2015-16. That group includes sophomore Megan Thothong, senior Raegan Bremer, junior Emily Gilbreth and sophomores Maddy Rayner and Yuka Kajiki.
Thothong competed in all 11 tournaments, making her one of only two Cougars to accomplish that feat. She etched her name into the Houston records book after winning the UNF Collegiate individual title on March 9-10, thanks to a record-setting 68 in the Final Round.
The Plano West Senior High product finished second on the team with a 74.41 average and nine rounds of par or better and earned a place on the All-American Athletic Conference Academic Team.
Bremer was the Cougars' leading competitor in 2014-15 for the second straight season. The Anaheim, Calif., native joined Thothong as one of only two student-athletes to compete in all 11 tournaments and led the team with a 74.00 scoring average and 10 rounds of par or better.
With five top-10 showings under her belt, Bremer was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team for the second straight season.
Gilbreth played in 10 tournaments during her sophomore season, posting a pair of top-5 finishes, including a career-best second-place showing at the UNF Collegiate. The Bellaire High product also fired a career-best 71 in the Second Round at the NCAA San Antonio Regional.
Rayner competed as a true freshman in 2014-15, appearing in five tournaments. The Southlake, Texas, native tied for 14th at the HBU Husky Invitational for her best showing of the year. She continued to refine her game over the summer and finished second at the WTGA State Amateur Championship in Waco, Texas.
Kajiki also played in her inaugural collegiate season a year ago, giving glimpses of a promising future. The Hiroshima, Japan, native and Monteverde Academy (Fla.) product enjoyed two top-5 finishes, including a third-place showing at her first American Athletic Conference Championships.
For her impressive effort, she joined Bremer on the All-American Athletic Conference Team and was one of six Cougars to appear on the league's All-Academic squad.
UP NEXT
Following the Minnesota Invitational, the Cougars will head to Tennessee to compete at the Mason Rudolph Championship this weekend. This will be the first time Houston has competed at this prestigious event.
From there, the team will take a few weeks off from their competitive schedule before returning to action at the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 4-6 at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas. A year ago, the Cougars finished second at this event during their final fall event of the season.
