HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Women's Golf program will face some of the nation's top teams during the 2015-16 season, Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Monday afternoon.
The Cougars will compete as far north as Minneapolis, as far east as Sunset, S.C. and could play as far west as Eugene, Ore., at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Despite its long travel for some events, Houston also will play in four tournaments in the Lone Star State.
"I am excited about the schedule. It's going to be very challenging, but hopefully, it goes with the direction of the program," Chadwell said "Hopefully, we will continue to step up our schedule a notch and challenge our kids. It's spread out more than it was last year, and we are going to be showcased in Texas several times. "
FALL SCHEDULE
The Cougars open their 2015 fall season when they tee off at the Minnesota Invitational on Sept. 14-15 at The Minikhada Club in Minneapolis, Minn.
From there, the Cougars compete in their second tournament in a week, participating at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 18-19 at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
"To be invited to the Minnesota Invitational and Mason Rudolph Championship to start our season reiterates what a good year we had and the good job our young women are doing," Chadwell said. "The fall is a phenomenal schedule."
The Cougars open the month of October with the first of three events at the Jim West Challenge at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas on Oct. 4-6.
The team will enjoy the Betsy Rawls Invitational, hosted at the University of Texas Golf Club and Academy on Oct. 19-20 in Austin, Texas, before closing out the fall campaign at the Alamo Invitational on Oct. 25-27 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
SPRING SCHEDULE
After a 3-month winter break, the Cougars open the spring season Feb. 7-9 at the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando.
From there, the team will enjoy a month-long break from competition before looking to defend their title at the UNF Collegiate on March 7-8 at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club. A year ago, the Cougars captured the first team title in school history at this event with Megan Thothong taking advantage of a Final-Round 68 to earn medalist honors and become only the second player in UH history to claim a tournament title.
On March 20-22, the Cougars will tee off at the LSU Tiger Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., and then wrap up the month on March 28-29 at the HBU Husky Invitational at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas.
The team wraps up the regular season on March 31-April 3 at the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C.
POSTSEASON
The Cougars begin postseason play April 17-19 when they tee off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Hammock Beach Golf & Spa Resort Ranch in Palm Coast, Fla.
Houston looks to make NCAA Regional play for the second straight season in 2015-16. NCAA Regionals will be held May 5-7at the following sites: Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course); Bryan, Texas (Traditions Club); Baton Rouge, La. (University Club) and Shoal Creek, Ala. (Shoal Creek Club)
The top-6 teams at each NCAA Regional and top three student-athletes not on those advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
"I hope we improve and build upon what we did last year, and we can do that by executing at a higher rate," Chadwell said. "I expect us to be more competitive and be in a few more final groups on the last day, even though the schedule is tougher.
The Cougars return all but one letterwinner from last year's team, which advanced to the NCAA San Antonio Regional for the program's first postseason berth.
Raegan Bremer is the program's lone senior after leading the Cougars during each of the last two years. A year ago, the Anaheim, Calif., native topped the team with a 74.00 scoring average and ten rounds of par or better and was named to the All-American Athletic Conference for the second straight season.
Playing in her first collegiate season, Thothong ranked second among the Cougars with a 74.41 average and nine rounds of par or better. She joined Bremer as the only Cougars to win an individual tournament championship with her title at the UNF Collegiate on March 10, thanks to a school-record Final-Round 68.
Like Thothong, Yuka Kajiki competed as a true freshman in 2014-15 and enjoyed tremendous success. The Hiroshima, Japan, native tied for third at the American Athletic Conference Championships to earn a place on the All-American Athletic Conference Team.
The Cougars also enjoyed success off the course with six ladies being named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Thothong was joined on the postseason squad by Kajiki, Courtney Ferguson, Emily Gilbreth, Kelli Rollo and Courtney Tibiletti.
