HOUSTON â€" University of Houston Men's Golf star Kyle Pilgrim was honored Wednesday as one of 22 student-athletes to receive the 2014-15 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. The selections were made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee.
In the classroom, Pilgrim recorded a 3.91 grade-point average in accounting in the Honors College and received his bachelor's degree in May. He was a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, was named to the 2013-14 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and is expected to receive the latter honor again this summer.
He also received the 2012-13 C-USA Academic Medal with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Pilgrim earned a variety of academic honors throughout the 2014-15 season. Most recently, he was recognized as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America for the second straight season.
In mid-May, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 At-Large Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible.
Pilgrim was equally impressive on the course. In 2014-15, he posted a 73.55 scoring average with 14 rounds of par or better to rank third among the Cougars in both categories. He enjoyed a pair of top-10 finishes and finished among the top-13 leaders in three of his last five collegiate tournaments of his career.
He recorded seven top-10 finishes and 13 top-20 showings during his career and won the individual title at the 2013 Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. At that tournament, he fired a career-low 66 in the Final Round, becoming only the ninth player in school history to shoot 66 or lower in the third round or later of any event.
With his appearance at the NCAA Lubbock Regional, Pilgrim became only the 14th player in Houston Men's Golf's storied history to compete in 3+ NCAA Regionals during his career. Sinking a birdie on the first hole of a team playoff against Purdue at the NCAA Lubbock Regional, Pilgrim clinched the fifth and final spot for the Cougars to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Following graduation, Pilgrim is pursuing a professional career as a golfer and is competing this week at the 45th Veritex Bank Texas State open at The Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewsiville, Texas.
Pilgrim was joined by Ian Happ (Baseball, Cincinnati); Patrick Lenehan (Men's Basketball, UConn); Jamie Kaplan (Women's Basketball, Tulane); Fabian Fiege (Men's Cross Country, Memphis); Lauren Sara (Women's Cross Country, UConn); Charles Harris (Football, Memphis); Katie Kirk (Women's Golf, East Carolina); Olivia Staples (Women's Golf, UCF); Luis Abe Matamoros (Men's Soccer, Tulsa); Kylie Davis (Women's Soccer, Memphis); Mackenzie Audas (Softball, UCF); Rokas Cepulis (Men's Swimming and Diving, East Carolina); Bailie Monahan (Women's Swimming and Diving, East Carolina); Nate Lammons (Men's Tennis, SMU); Alyssa Hibberd (Women's Tennis, Memphis); Brian Barney (Men's Indoor Track and Field, Cincinnati); Faith Dismuke (Women's Indoor Track and Field, UConn); Luis Hanssler (Men's Outdoor Track and Field, Memphis); Karoline Skatteboe (Women's Outdoor Track and Field, SMU) and Avery Acker (Women's Volleyball, SMU).
