LUBBOCK, Texas - University of Houston junior Blair Hamilton fired his second straight sub-par round Friday to lead the Cougars and tie for fourth at 5-under-par 142 on Friday evening during the NCAA Lubbock Regional Second Round on The Rawls Course at Texas Tech.
Hamilton, who was an All-American Athletic Conference Team honoree earlier this month, drained a team-high five birdies Friday while posting a 69 on the 7,349 yard, par-71 layout. The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native sank birdies on three of his first four holes to start his round on a positive note and capped his front nine with another birdie on the par-5 ninth hole.
Although he endured bogeys on three of his first seven holes to start his back nine, Hamilton rallied with his final birdie on the 17th hole. He became the first Cougar in school history to open an NCAA Regional with consecutive rounds in the 60s.
Hamilton also became the first Cougar with consecutive NCAA Regional rounds in the 60s since Brett Callas accomplished the feat to close out the 2003 NCAA Central Regional on the way to medalist honors on May 16-17, 2003.
As a team, the Cougars struggled at times in Friday's Second Round on the way to a team score of 287 and slipped into fourth place with a 36-hole total of 561. No. 9 Texas Tech grabbed the Second-Round lead at 552 with No. 2 Texas (555), No. 48 Duke (558), Southeastern Louisiana (564) and No. 38 Louisville (564) rounding out the top-6 team leaders.
The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
No. 13 Auburn (565), No. 26 California (566), Purdue (568), Georgia State (571), UC Irvine (578), No. 23 North Florida (583) and Charleston Southern (595) rounded out the field.
A day after tying a Houston record in NCAA Regional play with a 66, senior Kyle Pilgrim posted a score of 73 and tied for 14th at 139.
Junior Vincent Martino used a strong rally at the end on the way to a Second-Round 72 and tied for 26th at 142. The Southlake, Texas, native stood at 3-over after bogeying the par-3 16th hole but birdied each of his final two holes for his Second-Round standing.
Senior All-American Roman Robledo tied for 34th at 143, while freshman Alan De Bondt - who is making his NCAA Regional debut - tied for 70th at 153.
FINAL ROUND on SATURDAY
Teeing off No. 1, the Cougars will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from No. 38 Louisville and Southeastern Louisiana during Saturday's Final Round.
De Bondt is scheduled to start the day for the Cougars at 7:50 a.m., with Robledo (8:01 a.m.), Martino (8:12 a.m.), Pilgrim (8:23 a.m.) and Hamilton (8:34 a.m.) following. Rain is expected to hit the Lubbock area late Friday night/early Saturday morning.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
This marks the fourth straight season that the Cougars have competed in an NCAA Regional. It is the first time since 1999-02 that the Cougars accomplished that feat.
Entering this week, the Cougars' lineup has a combined six individual appearances in NCAA Regional play. Robledo leads the way with three NCAA Regional berths with Pilgrim (2) and Martino (1). This is the first time that De Bondt and Hamilton have competed in an NCAA Regional.
Robledo became only the fifth player in program history to compete in four NCAA Regionals during his career, joining Anders Hansen, B.J. Staten, Andy Sanders and Dean Larsson. Pilgrim became only the 14th player with at least three NCAA Regional berths on his resume.
This also will be the 18th NCAA Regional team appearance in the rich history of the Houston Men's Golf program. The Cougars can boast of one team championship (1998), two individual crowns (Brett Callas, 2003; Larsson, 1994) and seven top-5 team finishes.
A year ago, Houston competed as the No. 2 seed at the NCAA Eugene Regional and finished fourth at that event to earn the program's first berth to the NCAA Championships since 2001. At the NCAA Eugene Regional, Robledo and Curtis Reed tied for eighth at the Eugene Country Club with scores of 215.
