BOERNE, Texas -- University of Houston stars Emily Gilbreth and Yuka Kajiki each posted sub-par rounds to lead the University of Houston Women's Golf program during the Second Round of the Jim West Challenge on Monday afternoon at Tapatio Springs Resort.
Gilbreth and Kajiki each fired 1-under-par 71s on the 6,373-yard course to lead Houston. Starting on No. 1, Gilbreth birdied two of her first six holes before suffering a bogey on No. 8. After three consecutive pars, the Bellaire, Texas, native birdied the par-4 12th hole but gave it back with a bogey on No. 13 and added another bogey on No. 17.
Fortunately, Gilbreth capped her round with a birdie on the par-5 18th to move into a tie for 17th at 145.
Kajiki, who was a 2015 All-American Athletic Conference honoree, bettered her First Round score by four strokes with her own 71. The Hiroshima, Japan, native battled through three bogeys and only one birdie through her first 11 holes.
However, the birdies quickly came in a cluster. She sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 to move back to even par and added her third birdie in a 4-hole stretch with another on the par-4 13th hole to surge into a tie for 19th at 146.
Sophomore Courtney Tibiletti, making her season debut, remained steady with a 74 for the second straight day and was joined in a tie for 20th with teammate Megan Thothong at 148. Senior and two-time All-American Athletic Conference honoree Raegan Bremer was tied for 34th at 149.
As a team, the Cougars remained in sixth place with a 36-hole score of 585. Kent State held the team lead with a score of 566, four strokes ahead of Texas A&M. Florida State (572), Texas Tech (575) and Miami (Fla.) rounded out the top-5 leaders with Missouri (586), Texas (586), Oklahoma (593) and Illinois (597) following the Cougars.
