Freshmen Shine on First Day of Rice Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston Swimming team opened competition at the Rice Invitational with seven top-10 finishes Friday evening, including great races from freshmen Delia Weber and Hannah Herbst and the 800-yard freestyle relay teams at the Rice Aquatics Center Competition Pool.
After the first day of competition, Houston is in third place with a score of 192. Arkansas leads the way in first place with 330 points. Rice is in second with a score of 257, while the University of the Incarnate Word is in fourth at 136.
In her first individual collegiate race, freshman Delia Weber grabbed a fourth place finish in a time of 5:00.55 in the 500-yard freestyle. Right behind her in fifth place was freshman Hannah Herbst, who nabbed a time of 5:01.04 for her individual collegiate debut.
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomore Caitlin Horner took ninth place with a time of 24.57.
Houston's relay teams had two top-10 finishes in the 800-yard freestyle relay race. The team of freshmen Weber and Herbst and sophomores Emma Moore and Sharo Rodriguez finished in a time of 7:46.43 to take fourth place. They were followed by the relay team of Horner, Conor Glenn, Victoria Padial and Eleanna Koutsouveli, who placed sixth, coming in at 7:59.78.
In the 400-yard medley relay, Houston also nabbed two top-ten finishes. Relay A finished sixth (3:55.99) and Relay B seventh (3:59.85).
Houston returns to the pool Saturday morning for the final day of competition at the Rice Invitational. Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the first session will now start at 9 a.m., with the second session starting at noon.

UP NEXT
Following the final day of the Rice Invitational, the Cougars will host a homestand against SMU and North Texas in two dual meets Oct. 30 and 31 in the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center Natatorium. Action begins Friday at 6 p.m. against the Mustangs and Saturday at 11 a.m. against the Mean Green.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the first time as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 17-20, 2016. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19, 2016 in Atlanta.
