Cougar Comeback Falls Just Shy on Senior Day

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar women's soccer program saw their comeback bid fall just shy as they lost 3-2 to American Athletic Conference foe UCF on Senior Day, at Carl Lewis Field, on Sunday.
"That was a great college game," head coach Chris Pfau said. "What a way to send the seniors out at home. It is like night-and-day from last year to this year, and these seniors have a lot to do with that. Each one of them should be proud of where this program is and where it is going."
Houston got a pair of goals from senior Lexa Green, and freshman Desiree Bowen, but were unable to find an equalizer in the second half.
UCF found the scoreboard midway through the first half when Ashley Spivey was able to find the back of the net off one of the Knight's six corner kicks in the game. The corner from Madison Barney bounced off of Hannah Debose and Spivey was able to finish.
A little more than four minutes later, the Knights found the net again, this time from Kayla Adamek. After a Cougar turnover around midfield, Carol Rodrigues played a ball through to Adamek who chipped the ball over Houston keeper Jordan Brown for her fifth goal of the season.
The Cougars came roaring back less than three minutes later off a corner kick of their own. Sophomore Vanessa Almaguer played the ball into the box off the foot of sophomore Margo McEntire, before the shot ended up with Green who was able to finish. The goal was Green's fourth of the season, tying her with Bowen, and sophomore Selena Peters for the team lead.
Houston pulled even in the contest with less than five minutes to go in the first half, when Bowen connected on her fourth goal of the season. Sophomores Georgi Dolence and Kristina Schulz connected on a pair of passes to Bowen, who made a stop-and-go move at the top of the box where she ripped her shot for the score.
However, it was the Knights who would strike last as Rodrigues drilled a shot from right in front of the midfield circle, that Brown was able to save. The save bounced off the crossbar and came down to Spivey, who was able to finish after colliding with Brown.
COUGARS HONOR SENIORS
Prior to Sunday's match against the Knights, Pfau and the Cougars honored their six seniors as part of their Senior Day Festivities. Houston acknowledged the careers of Green and Brown along with Sydnie Green, Hailey Kirkwood, Gabby Rodriguez and Meghan Brascia.
The senior class has combined to play over 200 games and collect more than 150 starts, while logging over 15,000 minutes of game action.
