Houston Volleyball Defeats Wake Forest in Five

HOUSTON - Seniors Kadi Kullerkann and Cortney Warren led Houston Volleyball to a huge five set win over Wake Forest (18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11) to wrap the first ever Houston Cougar Classic Saturday evening.
Wake Forest (2-1) was undefeated going into the match against the Cougars (2-1). The Demon Deacons quickly took the first set with a 25-18 win outplaying the Cougars in every category. With fire in their eyes, Houston came back to top Wake Forest in set two, 25-16.
Set two was the best game for the Cougars as they hit .433 collectively, putting down 17 kills. Warren hit aggressively, recording a .500 hitting average or better in three of the five sets.
The Demon Deacons came back in the fourth set to tie it up and force a decisive fifth set. But, Houston rallied and clinched the match with a 15-11 win. The Cougars held Wake Forest to a .083 hitting average in the final set.
Kullerkann led the team with 24 kills, a new career high, hitting .383. Warren tallied 21 kills on the five-set match and recorded a .450 hitting percentage along with four blocks.
In the first match of the day, Texas State (2-1) took the early lead with a 27-25 win in set one.
The Cougars battled back and knocked out the Bobcats 25-11 in set two. Houston hit .520 as a team during set two and picked up 14 kills against Texas State. Senior right side hitter Cortney Warren led the Cougars as she went 6-of-10 with a hitting average of .600 in set two alone.
But Texas State ended up coming back and winning the third and fourth set to take the match and second place in the tournament.

UP NEXT
Houston travels to Lake Charles, La., for the first road tournament of the season. The Cougars are scheduled to compete in the McNeese State Big Daddy's Invitational Friday and Saturday. Houston meets UT Arlington Friday at 12:15 p.m. followed by a matchup against Jackson State at 4:45 p.m. The Cougars then face host team McNeese State at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.
